Nobody can accuse Trenton Gould, ’09, of lacking in ambition. After graduating with an Outdoor Education major from JSC, he opened his own company, Out There Adventures, in Stowe, VT. “I was the only employee, which meant I was the head of marketing, lead guide, logistic coordinator, receptionist and confused accountant. I learned a lot during those two years and was constantly impressed by how the diverse array of classes at JSC had set me up for success.”
After two years of being his own boss, Trenton decided it was time to work for other outfitters in order to gain more experience and continue to build upon his entrepreneurial skills. He worked as a guide in the High Sierras of California running week-long backpacking, rock climbing and rafting trips for teens. After two years in California, he began guiding all over the world. He was a logistics coordinator in New Zealand, taught outdoor education in Hong Kong, and led month-long expeditions in developing countries for World Challenge Expeditions. He lived and traveled to over 15 countries in two years. “It changed my life in ways I am still discovering.”
The last stop on his traveling tour was a job as a sea kayak guide in Seward, Alaska. He returned for a second year as the guide manager, and at the end of the season purchased the company, Kayak Adventures Worldwide.
“Throughout my professional career I have been amazed at how valuable my experiences at JSC were. In this line of work you have two choices: go to college or jump straight into the workforce. I weighed that decision heavily and cannot describe how grateful I am that I chose to go to JSC. The Outdoor Education program at JSC gave me an invaluable foundation of both hard and soft skills that I believe I would have missed if I had skipped school. Having my degree has helped me get jobs, but more importantly it developed me into a well-rounded and dynamic leader. I not only know how to tie the right knots, but I understand guide/client psychology, why research in outdoor education is important, and how to connect to different learning styles. The knowledge I gained at JSC helped me step into any job with confidence. It enabled me to inspire change within every company I’ve had the pleasure of working for. JSC supported me in turning my hobbies and passions into a career. Now I own a sea kayaking company in one of the most beautiful places in the world.”
