We assign roommates to first-year students based on the questionnaire that is part of the housing contract. Any such system has limitations, but most of our students stay as roommates for at least the first year and many continue to room together for at least one additional year.
You may also request a roommate. Both must request each other, and both housing contracts must be in before June 15.
Roommates can become lasting friends with whom you stay in touch for the rest of your life. You and your roommate will get to know each other extremely well, and living together in a small space will give you important living skills.
Occasionally, it doesn’t work out that way. If you and your roommate (or roommates) are struggling, talk to your Resident Assistant.
What to Do After Receiving Your Assignment
You will receive contact information for your roommate(s) in mid-July. It is a good idea to contact your roommate(s) to find out more about each other and what you are planning on bringing to campus with you. For example, we only allow one refrigerator and one microwave per room. It will be important to coordinate who will bring what.
We strongly encourage you to keep an open mind. Making a decision about whether you will like someone based on a social networking interaction or a superficial impression may prevent you from making a lifelong friend.
