What is an Interlibrary Loan?
Books, videos and other materials that are not located in the JSC Library collection can be retrieved from reciprocating libraries through interlibrary loan (ILL).
Who can use Interlibrary Loans?
This service is available to members of the Johnson State College academic community only, and your JSC Library account must be in good standing to request ILL or distance library services. Overdue items must be returned or renewed; fines must be paid.
ILL requests may take as little as 24 hours or up to six weeks to process. Please submit a realistic “Need By” date.
Please prioritize your requests. During busy times of the semester, the ILL staff will make every effort to process fiverequests per student per week.
Typically these items are not available through ILL:
- Reference books
- Rare books
- Popular books
- Non-academic or costly academic videos
- Textbooks for coursework
- Dissertations and theses (These usually must be purchased from a document delivery service.)
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproduction of copyrighted material.
Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or other reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship or research.”
If a user makes a request for or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
The JSC Library subscribes to the CONTU Guidelines. In a single calendar year, for one periodical title, we can only request 5 copies that are published within the last 5 years.
Pick up and Delivery
Books and videos will be held at the JSC Library Circulation Desk for pickup. A notice will be sent to your JSC email account. After 10 days, items will be returned to the lending library if not picked up.
Periodical articles will be delivered via email to your JSC email account. If an article is very lengthy or contains many graphics, it will be delivered by campus mail or first class mail to your home mailing address. Be sure to inform the JSC Library if your mailing address changes.
Renewals of ILL materials may be available. Some items arrive clearly marked “No Renewals.” These items must be returned by the due date to maintain the JSC Library’s borrowing privileges. Send renewal requests four days before due date to: firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 802-635-1277.
Interlibrary loan links are available within the VSC Library Catalog. From the “Holdings” page, click on the link “Place a Request” on the left hand side of the screen for an item that is not held at JSC. You may also submit requests for items you locate when using the “WorldCat” option in the catalog.
