Who would have thought a small group of guys in 1971 with the support of Coach Ward Heneveld would have started such a strong rugby tradition that has continued for over forty years?
The rugby clubs here at Johnson have had some very significant accomplishments over the years. Most recently, last year Johnson State College Rugby had one of its greatest victories when the women’s team won the national title for their division! The men’s (the oldest student-run club at the school) and women’s teams have consistently produced winning sides that have each seen their share of playoff appearances and tournament wins across New England and Canada. JSC has also sent many a player off to higher levels of rugby playing, coaching, and refereeing the sport. One of our proudest accomplishments, inspired by the loss of a beloved teammate, is the Preston Tournament.
The college has been very supportive of our rugby clubs; paying for coaching staff, maintaining the field, purchasing a new scoreboard, storage shed, and team uniforms, and supporting the women’s team’s travel to the national championship. However, with budget cuts and the increasing financial need of students, the school has done all it can to support the clubs financially. As a result, we are raising funds in order to renovate the field to the proper dimensions and size (it is too short and narrow).
Some of the changes we can make with your support include:
Relocation of utility poles and power lines to run under (instead of across) the fieldcompleted and paid for with alumni donations and SGA funds! Moving a drainage ditch on one side of the field, and remove a large area of brush and treescompleted and paid for with alumni donations and SGA funds! Raising corners of the field to create a level surfacecompleted and paid for with alumni donations and SGA funds!
- Renovation and improvements of path from campus to the field.
The improvement to the facilities will benefit players, spectators, and the alumni who join us for the tournament each year. Rugby is a sport where teamwork is essential and we need your help to be successful in meeting our goals. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with questions at 802-635-1417 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you for helping us to keep this tradition going.
