Educator and environmentalist Russ Weis first fell in love with the Johnson State community when he started taking courses here in pursuit of his master’s in education. Since that time, he’s worn many hats at JSC, from Upward Bound teacher to writing tutor to teaching in the Writing & Literature and Education departments, with a stop along the way in the SERVE Office, as coordinator of local projects. Currently he’s an academic advisor in the Advising & Registration Center.
A student-centered instructor who enjoys both teaching to and learning from his students, Russ believes that education and action go hand in hand. Thus, he strives to equip his students with the knowledge and tools to become effective local and global citizens. In addition to his teaching the fundamental skill of writing, his campus eco-work alongside committed and inspiring undergraduates is an endeavor that he feels is not only a responsibility but also a great privilege.
Fond of quoting the Chinese proverb “If you are planning for a decade, plant trees; if you are planning for a lifetime, educate people,” Russ truly believes that our work together can help improve our planet, so long as we plan it.
