In an effort to make a college degree as affordable as possible, Johnson State College is pleased to be able to offer current students the scholarships summarized here. In addition to meeting any specific criteria noted for an award, to be considered you must meet all of the qualifications below:
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at JSC
- You must be a returning full-time student (12 credits or more) for the upcoming academic year
- You must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress
- Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better*
You are not eligible if you are graduating in May or summer of the current academic year; you must be a returning student for at least the upcoming fall semester.
A 3.5 GPA is required for Presidential Leadership Scholarship awardees; GPA is not considered for the Gorton and Hurlbut Bullock scholarships.
(Note: Graduate students in education are eligible to apply only for the Endowed Scholarships for Education. Graduate applicants must be enrolled in at least 3 credits with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.)
Scholarships for Current JSC Students
Alumni Association General Scholarships
These scholarships are made possible by annual donations from alumni and awarded to top students with strong academic records who also demonstrate evidence of community and college leadership and service and exceptional talent and ability, with preference to those whose parents or relatives are JSC alumni.
Amy Fisher Memorial Scholarship
Established in memory of Amy Fisher, class of 2000, who died in 1998, this scholarship is awarded to a student who is active in the JSC community and has an interest in writing, especially poetry.
Barbara Gorham Maysilles Scholarship
An endowed scholarship donated by Barbara Gorham Maysilles, class of 1945, who has been active in church, club, civic and alumni work all her life; awarded to an outstanding student.
Freda V. Hebb Scholarship
An endowed scholarship in memory of Freda Hebb, class of 1925, who served as the one-person administrative staff at JSC for 30 years (1934-1972); awarded to an outstanding student with high academic standing.
Ginny Fitzgerald Scholarship
Given by the Alumni Association in memory of Ginny Fitzgerald, who was a staff member from 1989 to 1998, a longtime Alumni Council member and a 1991 EDP graduate, this scholarship is awarded to a student with interest in writing and literature.
Alice Whiting Scholarship
An endowed scholarship in honor of Professor Emeritus Alice Whiting, Class of 1956, who taught at JSC from 1965 to 2007 and chaired the Education Department from 1972 to 2004. It is awarded to a Vermont junior or senior majoring in elementary education with a strong academic record and the potential to become an outstanding elementary teacher.
Collins Education Major Scholarship
This scholarship is endowed by Donald and Susan Collins and awarded to a Vermont student who shows the promise of becoming a dedicated teaching professional.
Collins Student Teaching Scholarship
This scholarship is endowed by Donald and Susan Collins and awarded to a promising education student in their practicum semester.
Doris U. Spencer Endowment Scholarship
This scholarship is funded by an endowment established by Doris U. Spencer, who was a JSC faculty member from 1943 until her death in 1973; chair of the Education Department; and distinguished author, educator and “teacher of teachers.” It is awarded to outstanding education majors, some of whom are graduate students.
Graves/Story Endowment Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Dr. Carol Story, Classes of 1969 and 1974 (M.A.), the third generation of her family to graduate from Johnson State College, an expert in the field of education for gifted and talented children and a professor at JSC from 1987 to 2004. It is awarded to a student majoring in education, with preference to students specializing in education for the gifted and talented.
Mark and Star Heinrich Scholarship
This scholarship is endowed by Mark and Starleen (Sweeney) Heinrich, both class of 1969, and awarded to an outstanding upper-class female student with financial need who is majoring in education.
Robert DiGiulio Memorial Scholarship
Given to an outstanding student in elementary education in memory of Robert C. DiGiulio, Ph.D., who was an education professor for 16 years until his death in 2009.
Sarah E. Lizotte Memorial Endowment Scholarship
Awarded to an outstanding student studying Hospitality and Tourism Management, in memory of Sarah Lizotte (1975-2001), class of 2002.
Cyrus B. McQueen Memorial Research Scholarship
Awarded to students conducting research in the sciences at JSC, in memory of Cyrus McQueen, a professor in the Department of Environmental and Health Sciences from 1987 until his untimely death in 1999.
Daniel Holmes Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to students working to improve or preserve the environment, in memory of Daniel Holmes, class of 2001, who died in 2004 while working as a National Park Service firefighter.
Dr. C Memorial Scholarship
An endowed scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student majoring in biology, in memory of botany professor Dr. Philip C. Chiaravalle.
Dr. Richard M. Daum Scholarship
Endowed by internationally recognized cardiologist Richard M. Daum, M.D., class of 1973, and awarded to students majoring in Environmental Sciences or Health Sciences who show promise of success.
Justin Clayton “Keep Climbing” Memorial Scholarship
Awarded in memory of Justin Clayton, class of 2015, to an Outdoor Education major with financial need who demonstrates Justin’s passion for the outdoors and playful spirit; his love of travel, family, friends and soccer; and his commitment to the environment.
Margaret G. Ottum Environmental Scholarship
Awarded in memory of Margaret Ottum (JSC professor 1982-2002) to a rising junior or senior who is majoring in natural resources, environmental science or environmental education and who has demonstrated a commitment to making a difference in the world.
Matha DePecol Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is endowed in memory of Martha DePecol (1952-2002), class of 1977, a well-known educator and author of CD-ROM textbooks and lab manuals. It is awarded to science students who show promise of making a difference in the world.
Albert and Elisabeth Swinchoski Scholarship in Music
An endowed scholarship established by Professor Emeritus Albert Swinchoski (JSC faculty 1966-1987) and his wife, Elisabeth, to encourage the study of traditional orchestral instruments and awarded to a full-time student majoring in music education.
George Doey Memorial Scholarship
Endowed by a bequest from George Doey, class of 1983, a master stone mason and world traveler who earned his degree through EDP at age 67, this scholarship is awarded to a Vermont Student with a record of high academic achievement who is majoring in studio or fine arts.
Mary Parizo Memorial Scholarship
Awarded in memory of Mary Parizo, who worked in the Fine and Performing Arts Department of JSC for over 20 years, to hard-working students in the Fine and Performing Arts Departments who demonstrate Mary’s spirit and love of life.
Milton J. Rettenberg Scholarship
This endowment was donated by Mildred Bell of Jeffersonville and named in honor of Milton J. Rettenberg, an acclaimed and popular pianist. This scholarship goes to a full-time student majoring in music, with preference for students studying piano as their primary instrument.
Bill Doyle Political Science Scholarship
Endowed by Professor William Doyle, JSC professor since 1958 and a Vermont state senator from 1969 to 2016, this scholarship is awarded to students majoring in political science.
Ellsworth Trust Scholarship
Granted by the Ellsworth Trust, a private foundation endowed by the late Professor Emeritus Robert A. Ellsworth (1907-1994), who taught political science and history at JSC from 1957 to 1973, this scholarship is awarded to outstanding students majoring in political science and history.
Eugene Sapadin Memorial Scholarship
An endowed scholarship awarded in memory of Eugene Sapadin, who taught at JSC from 1972 to 2011 and passed away in September 2013, to an undergraduate student majoring in humanities who has taken at least one philosophy or ethics course and is deemed to have written the best essay.
Robert J. Harris Political Science Scholarship
An endowed scholarship awarded to a student majoring in political science, in memory of Robert Harris (1950-1998), class of 1976, a Vermont representative for 20 years, a Windsor town selectman, and a member of the Vermont State Colleges Board of Trustees.
Roger H. Allen Memorial Math Scholarship
An endowed scholarship established by Irene Amilhat Allen, Ph.D., class of 1957, in memory of her late husband, Roger H. Allen, to support students in their studies of mathematics.
Stella and Walter Sargent Math Scholarship
Endowed by JSC professor Stella (Bialecki) Sargent (who taught Mathematics from 1966-1985) to support a student majoring in mathematics, studying to teach math or involved in other mathematics studies.
Alyson Finn Memorial Rugby Scholarship
Awarded in memory of Alyson Finn, class of 2013, who restarted the women’s rugby club in 2011 and served as team captain, leading the to the national title that year; bestowed on a returning student who is a member of the Rubgy Club and shares Aly’s spirit and dedication to the sport.
Carrie Hubbard Stewart Scholarship
Endowed scholarships established by George Stewart in memory of his mother, Carrie Hubbard Stewart, class of 1914, who graduated from the Johnson Normal School, worked until age 83 and passed away at age 96. This scholarship is awarded to women who are working their way through college.
Community Service Scholarship
Awarded to students with high academic achievement and an outstanding record of community service while at JSC.
Follett College Stores Scholarship
Awarded annually by the Follett College Stores to a student with an outstanding academic record.
George Tormey Memorial Scholarship
Established by alumnus James “Jeff” Crowley, class of 1978, in memory of his friend George Tormey (also ‘78), a top alpine ski racer who helped JSC place in the Top 3 at the National Collegiate Ski Championships, this scholarship is awarded to a full-time student with a passion for skiing, with preference to a student who participates in ski racing.
Harold Sylvester Scholarship
Funded by the Sylvester-Hulburd Endowment, which was established by the Sylvester-Hulburd family to honor and stimulate personal and institutional public service in Lamoille County, while recognizing two native sons of the county and close friends from the mid-twentieth century. Established in honor of Harold C. Sylvester, Esq. (1904-1984) and Benjamin N. Hulburd, Esq. (1898-1964), this scholarship is awarded to an upper-class student with public and community service career goals.
Helen Braley Stearns Scholarship
Endowed by Precott Stearns in memory of his mother, Helen Braley Stearns, class of 1913, a dedicated educator in the Vermont and New Jersey school systems, this scholarship is awarded to outstanding students with financial need.
James B. Keesling Veteran Scholarship
Established by Emory Garland Keesling II in memory of his brother, James Keesling (class of 1975), this scholarship is awarded to students who are veterans and have shown dedication to their academics.
Jane Stearns Memorial Scholarship
Endowed in memory of Jane Stearns, who had a lifelong interest in athletics and education and coached girls basketball at the high school level for many years, this scholarship is awarded to an upper-class student with public and community-service career goals.
John Lord Scholarship
Funded by an endowment created by John Lord, who retired in 2004 after 27 years of distinguished service as JSC Registrar, this scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student with an excellent academic record and a demonstrated commitment to the College.
JSC Faculty Federation Scholarship
Awarded to students who demonstrate service to their college and community while maintaining academic excellence.
JSC Staff and Faculty Scholarship
Funded by donations from JSC staff and faculty to support students with academic achievement and involvement in community service.
JSC Student Government Association Memorial Scholarship
Awarded by the JSC Student Government Association in memory of JSC community members who have passed away.
Julia V. and Ervin L. Willey Scholarship
Endowed by Richard E. Willey, class of 1971, and his wife, Rosalind Weiss, in honor of Dick’s parents, Julia and Ervin Willy, who grew up in the Northeast Kingdom in the early 1900s; awarded to deserving students with good academic records.
Karii Cloud Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a transgender student in memory of JSC alum Karii Cloud, a gifted and talented actress, accomplished guitarist, award-winning potter, avid trick skier and tenacious rugger, who died in 2014 at the age of 25.
Luella Eldridge Scholarship
Endowed by Luella Eldridge (1912-2005), who grew up on a Vermont farm and worked her way through college, and who’s mother, aunt and several nephews and nieces attended Johnson, this scholarship is awarded to a worthy student with high potential.
Presidential Leadership Scholarships
Awarded to outstanding students with high academic and leadership achievements.
Robert G. Clarke Scholarship
Endowed by Robert G. Clarke, president of Vermont Technical College from 1984 to 1999 and chancellor of the Vermont State Colleges until his retirement in 2009, and his friends and family. Awarded annually to a Vermont resident who is a first-generation college student, is enrolled at a VSC institution, in the final year of their degree program, has a minimum 3.0 GPA, and has financial need. This scholarships rotates throughout the colleges.
Stowe Rotary Scholarship
Endowed by the Stowe Rotary Club and awarded to a single parent from Lamoille County who demonstrates academic diligence.
The Charlotte Hurlbut Bullock and Carolyn B. Fisher Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established by Earl and Carolyn Fisher (classes of 1968 and 1961, respectively) in honor of the alumna and in memory of her late mother, Charlotte. Awarded to an outstanding returning undergraduate student who has demonstrated financial need.
Endowed by Emma Thompson (JSC staff member for 40 years, from 1969 to 2009) and George Desmarais, this scholarship is awarded to a graduate of a Lamoille County high school with a good academic record and a record of community service.
Union Bank Scholarships
Endowed by the Union Bank and awarded to students from the bank’s service area who show great promise of civic and business leadership and have an excellent academic record and community service experience.
Luella and J.H. Griffin Scholarship
Endowed by prolific writer J.H. Griffin and his wife, Luella, both of whom served on the JSC staff and faculty from 1969 to 1970, this scholarship is awarded to the student deemed to have written the best essay on the topic “Why I Came to JSC.”
William J. Kelly Scholarship
Endowed by Professor Emeritus John Duffy, and his wife, Barbara Kelly Duffy, in honor of her father, William J. Kelly, a graduate of the Columbia School of Journalism who enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a reporter, writer and editor, this scholarship is awarded to the student editor of Basement Medicine, the JSC student newspaper.
Johnson State College is an NCAA Division III institution and per NCAA regulations is prohibited from offering any athletically related financial aid. Athletic participation, leadership or ability is never considered in selecting recipients for scholarships offered by the college.
As with all Johnson State College students; any NCAA Division III student athlete is permitted to receive institutional grants and scholarships offered by the college if the criteria are met.
