Small Department, Big Ideas
We are a relatively small department at JSC, but we dream big. Our courses are academically challenging, yet we provide the personal attention and instruction to help our students succeed. We understand the power and the promise of mathematics, and we strive to instill that same sense of awe and enthusiasm in our students.
We believe there has never been a more exciting time to study math. In fact, some people consider this the golden age of mathematics, as the pace of advancements in math parallels the explosive growth in other sciences. Combined with technological advances that have made “big data” possible, math lets us answer questions that we couldn’t even ask before.
Using data and statistics and modeling and analytics, we can unlock many of life’s secrets and solve real-word problems. And big data enables us to process vast amounts of information, identify patterns and trends that are easy to miss in smaller samples, and reveal things we never knew before.
At JSC, we go beyond the numbers to provide a greater context for what you learn. We also examine the relationships between math and other disciplines, such as history, philosophy and music. Our courses focus on class participation and challenge you to think creatively while developing strong critical-thinking and analytical skills.
Mathematics is a rigorous program of study at JSC. Courses are taught in small classes by faculty who are experts in a range of mathematical specialties, all of us dedicated teachers who get to know you and make ourselves available outside of class. As advisors, we work diligently to keep you on track toward degree completion and help you plan your next steps after JSC.
