What Is Academic Coaching? Is It Different Than Tutoring?
Academic coaching offers the same benefits of tutoring — help with specific issues and assignments, feedback on writing and ideas — but goes even further, to help you identify and improve big-picture issues such as time management, organization, and planning. Ideally, you will work with the same academic coach over a period of time, which will help make the time you spend working with him or her more effective.
This doesn’t mean that we won’t help if you walk into our office with a paper that is driving you crazy! But we can also help you identify patterns in your approach to academic work that may be holding you back, so that emergency visits to an academic coach are less frequent and you are able to better to work through problems independently, when help isn’t available.
Academic coaches can provide:
- Scheduled and drop-in individual peer and professional assistance in most first- and second-year courses
- Professional writing and math coaching
- Professional English as a Second Language coaching
- Professional online writing support
- Professional exam prep for PRAXIS and GMATs
Scheduled, drop-in and online academic coaching options are available.
Tutoring and TRIO
Tutoring services are one of the many services offered by Academic Support Services, a federally funded TRIO program. Our goal is to make education and support services more accessible.
While we serve ALL JSC students, priority is given to those who qualify for the TRIO grant. If you are interested in learning more about TRIO and the benefits of becoming a TRIO student, stop by the Academic Support Services office, located in Dewey Hall, Room 114.
