Every undergraduate student at Johnson State is eligible to receive help from JSC’s professional and peer academic coaches, so that even your toughest subject need not remain a barrier to college success!
What Is Academic Coaching?
Academic coaching is tutoring on steroids! In addition to providing help with specific assignments, feedback on writing mechanics and organization, and topic brainstorming, academic coaches can help you identify patterns in your approach to academic work that may be holding you back, so that you’re better able to work through problems independently. Students typically work with the same academic coach over a period of time, which makes the time you work together more effective. If you need immediate help on a particular assignment, our peer coaches are available on a walk-in basis at our regularly scheduled evening coaching hours in the dorms.
You don’t have to have an official academic coach in order to get help, however; we’ll gladly assist if you walk into our office with an assignment that’s driving you crazy! But using a coach can help you identify patterns in your approach to academic work that may be holding you back, so that emergency visits are less frequent and you’re able to better work through problems independently, when help isn’t available.
Academic coaches provide:
- Scheduled and drop-in individual peer and professional assistance in most first- and second-year courses;
- Professional writing and math coaching;
- Professional coaching in English if English is not your native language; and
- Professional online writing support.
