Welcome to Johnson State College. As you explore our Web site, I think you’ll discover what makes JSC such a distinctive small liberal arts college and more. You’ll find that we offer all the resources students need to make a Johnson education rewarding and challenging. More than that, I think you’ll gain some insight into what it’s like to live and study here. We’re a dynamic community, socially and politically active, and committed to teaching and learning. It’s easy to find your place here.
Johnson has a long, proud history. From humble beginnings in 1828 as the town’s only schoolhouse, the liberal arts college of today offers more than 25 majors in the arts, the sciences, education, and a range of professional programs. At Johnson, we believe that education has the power to transform lives, and we’ve designed our academic programs and co-curricular activities to support this belief.
I believe that Johnson State College provides the perfect environment for students to experience the joys and meet the challenges of undergraduate study. Our First-Year Experience program provides a solid foundation and supportive environment for students as they first explore and then specialize in an academic major. At Johnson, you’ll enjoy the intimacy of a small college community—you’ll know your professors and they’ll know you—while having easy access to national and international educational experiences through our Study Abroad and National Student Exchange programs. If you are interested in service to the community, our SERVE Office has a range of options for you to consider, from local service activities to international experiences through our Break Away program.
Our classes are small, with an average class size of 17 students. JSC students enjoy a range of outside-the-classroom experiences, from internships and fieldwork, varsity athletics, and student clubs, to fine art exhibits, musical and theatrical performances, and thought-provoking lectures. Our students stay busy and engaged while at Johnson, and our graduates carry that energy forward to become strong, contributing members of their communities: lawyers, doctors, teachers, politicians, business leaders, caring parents.
After you’ve spent some time learning about us online, drop by the campus. You’ll be amazed. We have a breathtaking hilltop campus in the heart of the Green Mountains. Many of us would love to talk with you about the college, and we would be happy to have a current student show you around. I hope to see you on campus soon.
