The Town of Johnson

The town of Johnson is very small, with only 3,300 people. It does have a a number of restaurants, several auto service stations, a coffeehouse, two banks, and several small boutiques. Johnson is also host to the Vermont Studio Center, a year-round professional study and retreat center for artists and writers that hosts many international guests.

Downtown Johnson is a short walk from campus. Students may buy basic supplies in downtown Johnson or in the nearby town of Morrisville.

Transportation

The town of Johnson does not have public buses or trains. Students’ transportation options are:

  • Taking the Badger Bullet, which is a JSC shuttle van that travels to Burlington on the weekends;
  • Bringing a car to campus;
  • Having friends with cars (Many students at JSC have cars on campus, so having your own car is in no way necessary)

Transportation can be arranged to bring you to and from the airport or bus station for breaks/vacations.

The State of Vermont

Vermont, with a population of 623,050, is considered one of the most rural and safe states in the U.S. Vermont is in close proximity to major urban centers such as Boston, and Montreal, Canada. The Green Mountain State is renowned for its quaint villages and pastoral landscape, its fertile and pristine environment. Pond and treesIt is also a major destination for outdoor recreation, especially skiing and hiking. Vermont is consistently in the forefront of national efforts to balance the conservation of a quality environment with a diverse and sustainable economic climate. Vermont also has a long tradition of quality higher education with over 50,000 students enrolled in public and private universities and colleges, including a significant number of international students, scholars and professionals.

Burlington and Montpelier

Burlington, population of 39,000, is the largest city and urban cultural center in Vermont. Burlington hosts four colleges, Vermont’s international airport, as well as many restaurants, movie theaters, cultural events and concerts. The city of Montpelier is the picturesque state capital with a population of 8,000. Both cities are within an hour drive of JSC.
