Stearns Renovation Project: Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about the renovation project? Send an e-mail and get answers!

What kind of security will be in place once Stearns Hall is a 24-hour facility?

JSC will implement a number of security features in the new facility. Cameras will be placed at every entrance/exit in the renovated building. Evening access will be restricted to the main entrance of Stearns only and regulated by a proximity reader. Finally, additional staff will be hired for building security.

Is the new 1867 Room in Dewey only for meetings and conferences?

For the duration of the renovation project, students are welcome to use the new 1867 Room for quiet study whenever the room is not reserved for conferences and meetings. The room will also be used for some evening performances, as well.

I heard that we will be eating in SHAPE during construction. Is this true?

No! The Stearns Dining Room will remain open through the end of the spring 2008 semester, and will be back online when students return for classes in the fall. Because construction will be going on, access will only be available at the dining room level.

(Summer camp and conference participants will have a temporary dining area in the gym, but this doesn't apply to students.)

What happened to the Dewey Cafe?

It will be replaced by a new cafe to open in Stearns at the end of October.

Where will I buy my books and get my mail?

The bookstore has moved to its new location in Dewey over the break.

The mailroom has returned to its permanent location in Stearns.

Will Stearns Hall be open during construction?

The Stearns Hall dining room will be open through the end of the spring 2008 semester. The Public Safety office, bookstore, mailroom, 1867 Room and Women's Center will be moved to their new or temporary locations by March 1, 2008 (check the Project Blog for weekly updates). The rest of the offices and rooms have been taken offline and/or relocated until the project is completed.

After March 1, students will only be able to access the building via the dining room level entrance.

So many things have been or are going to be relocated — how do I find out where they are?

Check out the Relocation Guide for the master list of new and temporary locations as well as the Project Blog for frequent updates.

When will the new student center open?

The grand opening will be October 30, 2008!
