One look at the list of Jasmine Yuris' campus activities makes it clear why she was the 2010 recipient of the Vermont Campus Compact Commitment to Service and Engagement Award, which acknowledges one student per VCC campus for both the breadth and depth of his/her community involvement.
She has been a Bonner Leader/ AmeriCorps member and interned at the Lamoille County Natural Resource Conservation District, where she worked with local schools to create environmental educational opportunities and programs for school-aged children. On the JSC campus, Jasmine has been a member of the campus Eco-Rep Team and focused on composting, recycling, and articulating sustainability goals for the college. She is a Serve student leader, working with the Serve staff to support event planning. Jasmine was a lead organizer for JSC’s Hike for Hunger and the Coral Reef Run, and participated in numerous other Serve activities, including helping to weatherize a local seniors' home, setting up for the Morrisville Rotary’s Polar Plunge and for the Green Mountain Club’s Snowshoe Festival, putting the JSC community garden to bed, and performing stewardship tasks at the Babcock Nature Preserve. Jasmine has also served as secretary to JSC’s Green Solutions and the director of clubs for the Student Government Association. She participated in the Break Away alternative break program for two years, and traveled to Oregon to volunteer with a sustainable urban farm in the spring of 2010.
That she'd have the opportunity to participate so actively in her community is something that attracted Jasmine to JSC in the first place. "I knew I wanted to be in Vermont, and that I wanted to be at a small school that had both strong academics and a strong experiential learning/service work program." JSC fit the bill. Additionally, she was impressed with the faculty and staff she met while doing a campus visit. "The people that I met were so unique, and doing really noble work."
In addition to environmental advocacy, Jasmine is majoring in Wellness and Alternative Medicine with secondary education licensure. "I want to teach with a focus on wellness and nutrition." She hopes to connect her interest in the environment with her passion for teaching by working in an alternative education program, such as Vergennes High School's Walden Project.
In the meantime, Jasmine continues to work to make her campus community a more sustainable one.
