During my sophomore year, I took a class called Elementary Literacy Instruction, where I had to spend one morning a week in a local elementary school classroom. The elementary school teacher really helped me see what teaching was all about. I prepared lesson plans, did many classroom observations, took notes for my own future teaching and assisted in other ways. And the classroom component at JSC required me to do a lot of reflection on the teaching experience, guided by my professor Dr. Darlene Witte-Townsend.
I really got to know the elementary school students and teacher well, and gained a lot of experience and resources that I will definitely use in my own classroom. I also feel like the class helped assure me, early on in my studies, that I was a good match for the elementary education major.
