Jeremy Ayotte

Jeremy Ayotte

Anthropology & Sociology Major, Political Science Minor,
Class of 2008

Wolcott, Vt.

Jeremy Ayotte, originally from Wolcott, Vt., didn’t come to JSC intending to be a sociology and anthropology major. However, he says, “After two classes in sociology, I knew that it was going to be my life. I love sociological theory and enjoy quantitative research.”

And Jeremy feels that his passion for the subject is matched by the dedication of his professors. “The dedication that Dr. William Brower, Dr. Susan Green and Dr. Jerry Himelstein bring to JSC’s sociology and anthropology department is second to none. I had left JSC for a semester and considered going to other colleges in Vermont but could not find another sociology program that offered the close relationship that I had at JSC. At other programs you may see a professor outside of the classroom once a month, if you are lucky.”

The size and connectedness of the campus community is another aspect of his experience at JSC that he appreciates. “Because there are small classes, students have a chance to ask questions and debate in a classroom setting.”

Outside of class and studying, Jeremy enjoys attending the many lectures sponsored by different JSC departments. He says that these speakers help bring a “broader perspective” of the world to students on campus.

In the future, Jeremy intends to pursue graduate work in political sociology or apply for the Master in Liberal Arts (globalization track) program at Dartmouth College. In the meantime, he plans to continue to expand his knowledge of sociology and enjoy his time here. “At JSC, we are a close community that seems to be there for each other during hard times. I’m not saying that other colleges are not close as a community, but there is something at JSC that provides a safe feeling.” These are qualities that Jeremy doesn’t take for granted.
