Welcome, JSC Class of 2012! We're so happy to have you join our community! Below is the tentative schedule of events for Orientation Weekend 2008. Please note this schedule is subject to change — a final schedule will be given to you on Friday, August 22, 2008 at Check-in.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 22, 2008

The following offices will be open during regular business hours: Business Office, Registrar, Financial Aid, Bookstore, Public Safety, Academic Computing Center (LLC 217), Mailroom, ARAMARK, Dining Services, Residence Life, Academic Support Services, and Advising and Career Center

8 a.m. - noon Orientation Check-in
11 a.m. - 12 p.m. Parent and Family Information Session
11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Lunch (Stearns Dining Hall)
1 - 1:30 p.m.

Family Farewells

This is a time for parents and families to say goodbyes to their students and make promises to stay in touch

  • New Student and Orientation Leader Session #1
1:30 - 2:30 p.m. Parent and Family Information Session
2:30 - 4 p.m. New Student and Orientation Leader Activity #2
2:30 - 4 p.m. President's Reception for Parents (Julian Scott Memorial Gallery, Dibden Center for the Arts)
4 - 5 p.m. Academic Department Orientation: An opportunity for students to meet faculty in their intended majors
5 - 6:30 p.m. Floor Dinners
6:30 p.m. The Johnson Connection (Dibden) : Experience the sights and sounds of JSC and beyond. This event will prepare you to get the most out of your Orientation Weekend. Formal welcome by Dean of Students Dave Bergh.
7 p.m. Last Call: Screaming with Pleasure (Dibden) "Last Call" will increase awareness and sensitivity to tough issues, answer questions and dispel myths, and locate health and educational resources in the JSC community
8:30 p.m. Floor Meeting with your Resident Assistant (R.A.)
9 p.m. Live Music and Candlelighting (Quad)
 

SATURDAY, AUGUST 23, 2008

Bookstore: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Residence Life and Public Safety: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Academic Computing Center (LLC 217): 1 - 4 p.m.

Academic Support Services: 1 - 4 p.m.

8 - 9:30 a.m. Breakfast (Stearns Dining Hall)
9:45 a.m. Community Meeting (Dibden): Wake up, get your bearings, learn about the day's activities and events (Prize giveaway event)
10 a.m. JSC Common Reading Program and Going Beyond the Book (Dibden): All students participate in small discussion groups facilitated by JSC faculty and staff members
11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Lunch (Stearns Dining Hall)
1 - 2:30 p.m. Get Connected (Dibden)
2:30 - 5 p.m. Get Out! You will sign up for one of the following when you check in on Friday - Frisbee Golf, Ultimate Frisbee, Yoga, Ropes Course, Volleyball, Paint the Rock, Tie Die, Community Garden. . . to name a few!
5:30 - 7 p.m. Dinner (Stearns Dining Hall)
7:30 p.m. Brian Brushwood (Dibden): #1 College Magician

10 - 10:45 a.m. Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore! (Dibden) Explore the diversity of your environment in this supportive, interactive session led by Dr. Mary Frances Arnold.
11 a.m. -12:30 p.m.
  • Orientation Group Meeting/Quantitative Reasoning Assessment: Orientation groups travel to individual sites for required diagnostic Quantitative Reasoning assessments
12 - 1:30 p.m. Lunch (Stearns Dining Hall)
12 - 5 p.m. Returning students move in
1:30 - 4 p.m. SHAPE-A-PALOOZA (Varsity Gym, SHAPE Facility): Job, club and activity fair. Get a job! Get involved!
4:30 - 6 p.m. Dinner (Stearns Dining Hall)
7 p.m. Residence Hall Floor Meetings: New and returning students meet with floor Resident Assistant (R.A.)
8 p.m. Bonfire and Music
 

MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 2008

  • Opening Convocation (Dibden)
  • Community Picnic (South Lawn): immediately follows Convocation
