Who participates?
This course is open to all first year students at Johnson State College.

How many participants will be on the trip?
There will be a maximum of 10 participants — two instructors and up to 8 students. We try to have an equal number of male and female participants and leaders.

What does it cost?
There is a course fee of $175, which covers all expenses associated with the trip including food, group equipment, lodging at the college, camping fees, and costs associated with travel.

How do I pay?
A course fee of $175 will be included on your bill and you will be financially responsible for this. Financial aid and scholarship monies can be used towards this course fee.

When do I need to be at Johnson State College for the trip?
Please be sure to arrive by 6:00 pm, at the Stearns Student Center lobby on the campus of Johnson State College.

Do I need to eat before my arrival?
Yes. Dinner is not provided on Sunday night, but all other meals will be covered until dinner Friday night, which is not included.

What do I need to bring?
You should bring everything that is listed on the equipment list , and consider bringing the optional items as well. Please note that it is important to have the appropriate clothing (many items are "non-cotton" to ensure your comfort and safety in the outdoor environment).

What if I do not have all of the clothing and gear listed on the equipment list?
Some personal equipment, such as sleeping bags, sleeping pads and expedition size backpacks are available to borrow through our program. Be sure to get us your request before July 30 so we can have the equipment set aside for you. You do need to have the appropriate clothing (non-cotton socks and other important clothing). Many items can be found in thrift stores or at outdoor gear shops such as Eastern Mountain Sports, Climb High, and the Outdoor Gear Exchange in Burlington.

Should I bring money on the trip?
There is no need to bring money on the trip as all meals are provided and other costs included. You may want to bring some money if you need to purchase the book or other items from the college bookstore.

How physically fit do I need to be?
You should be in good physical condition. We will be backpacking 3-6 miles per day, carrying large packs, and traveling through Vermont's mountainous terrain. However, most healthy, active young adults can participate in the program. If you have questions about the physical demands of the trip or your ability to participate, please contact us with questions.

Do I need to have camping or backpacking experience?
This experience is designed for beginners and guidance and instruction will be included; therefore you do not need to have personal experience. Those that come with personal experience and expertise will be challenged as well.

How much academic work will be involved?
During the trip we ask you to bring a notebook and to write one thoughtfully composed "goal letter." During the semester the work is not extensive, but you are expected to read one book, write 3 papers, and complete some additional assignments and online quizzes. We will also schedule a minimum of three meetings during the semester, when we will reconnect and socialize, and discuss the book and related topics.

How much time will I need to commit during the semester?
We will have a minimum of three mandatory meetings. In addition, expect to commit approximately 30 minutes to 3 hours per week on reading, online assignments and other projects, and one community service project.

How do I sign up?
You can select the course as one of your first year seminar choices when you sign up for the summer new student orientation sessions. You are required to complete the course document packet and return the documents by July 15. Please direct any questions or correspondence to:
