Equipment List

TentSummer Backpacking Trip

You are required to be prepared with the proper clothing and footwear for this backcountry trip.  Some of the equipment listed may be borrowed from the Outdoor Education Program and is labeled with an *.  Please contact the course instructors to reserve the equipment you may need to borrow.

Clothing to Wear

2 Pair Socks (either synthetic or wool - no cotton!)

  • Hiking Boots (sturdy leather or lightweight hiking shoes - must be broken in)
  • Underwear as needed (synthetic or silk best, cotton is ok)
  • Long underwear bottom (wool, synthetic or silk)
  • Long pants (nylon or synthetic wind pants  -no jeans or cotton!)
  • (Optional) Shell Pants (water/windproof)
  • Shorts (nylon, quick drying)
  • T-shirt (synthetic is best, cotton is ok)
  • Long underwear top (wool, synthetic or silk)
  • Insulating layer (fleece or wool pullover, sweater or light jacket - no cotton!)
  • Shell/Rain jacket (wind and water proof protection from the elements)
  • Rain gear (coverage from hood to ankles - can be same as shell items listed above)
  • Wool or synthetic winter hat
  • Hat with brim
  • Handkerchief / bandanna
  • Camp shoes (lightweight sneakers, crocs or sandals)

Equipment for Overnight Trip

  • Pack (internal frame 4500 - 6000 cu.in.)*
  • Rain cover for pack (or lined with contractor trash bag*)
  • Sleeping pad*
  • Sleeping bag in waterproof stuff bag*
  • Nalgene (or similarly tough) water bottle (one quart)
  • Another quart bottle as above, or a hydration bladder (must be able to carry 2 quarts total)
  • Headlamp or Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Mess kit or lightweight, unbreakable plate/bowl
  • Drinking cup
  • Eating utensils
  • Food Bag (or stuff sack/ sm. duffel)
  • Personal toilet items (toothbrush & paste)
  • Sunscreen, insect repellent, lip balm

More Personal Items

  • Fire starter (lighter/ matches)
  • Pocket knife or multi-tool
  • Notebook and pencil in Ziploc bag
  • Watch
  • Gaiters (optional)
  • Camera (optional)
  • Binoculars (optional)
  • Sitting pad (optional)
  • Wet wipes (optional)

 

Johnson State College will provide the following gear.  (Please do not bring your own):

  • Tents and tarps
  • Stoves and cooking supplies
  • Water purification

Do not bring a cell phone, video games or personal audio players!
