Services for Students
The Counseling Center embraces the philosophy of Holistic Wellness, which recognizes that there are many approaches to “healing.” This framework allows staff to assist students through both traditional (“talk therapy”) means, as well as mind-body approaches, such as instruction in stress management practices (e.g. meditation) or nutrition counseling.
We offer individual counseling, couples counseling and group therapy services (some past groups have included: stress management, adjustment to college, and communication skills).
We also offer mediation services for students who are experiencing difficulty working through a conflict with a peer. Additionally, students are served through campus programs such as workshops and residence hall talks. The duration of counseling can range from one meeting to throughout the academic year, depending on the unique needs of each student.
Below is a list of the various services we can provide and a brief description:
Individual Counseling
Students typically meet with counselors for 50-minute sessions, once a week. Duration of treatment can range from a one-time “check-in” to weekly throughout the academic year. Students are welcome to see alternate counselors if they feel they do not “click” with the staff person they first see.
Drug and Alcohol Psycho-Education
Couples Counseling
Staff members provide couples counseling to student couples who are seeking assistance with their relationship.
Group Counseling
Staff members are available to meet with groups of students who have identified common concerns, such as self-esteem, relationship problems, or eating disorders.
Consultation
Students who seek psychological advice regarding concerns about others are encouraged to give us a call or simply stop by and make an appointment. At various times this option has been utilized by clubs, teams, groups of roommates or friends, as well as individuals.
Crisis Intervention
Students in immediate need of assistance can receive “walk-in” emergency consultations during our business hours. In the event that a crisis occurs after our regular business hours, students usually seek assistance from Residence Hall staff who connect them with the local Community Mental Health Crisis Services (888-4914, 8am-4pm/888-4231, 4pm-8am & weekends). In most cases, a follow-up plan includes an appointment at the Counseling Center on the next available business day.
Outreach Services
We are very pleased to provide presentations on special topics in Residence Halls, classrooms, and student groups. Some past topics have included: Stress Management, Responsible Social Behavior, Conflict Resolution, and Adjustment of Major Stressors such as sudden losses). Please contact us with any request for outreach.
Referrals
In the event that a student may be better served by a specialized program or practitioner, we discuss this with the student in the initial meeting and arrange a referral as needed. Students also have the option of requesting to see a different counselor than the one they begin with at the Center.
