| Johnson State College Ultimate
Though kids have been throwing a disc around the Johnson campus for a long time,
organized ultimate didn't really start until 2003, when a
talented and dedicated group had the desire to get involved in local events and make JSC known to the
governing body of the sport, the Ultimate Players Association. There were quite a number of them,
enthusiastic men and women ready to try a great sport.
Cleverly, they used the JSC acronym, and assumed the name Johnson Space Camp. (you may have seen their discs around.)
Unfortunately, many of these players had other duties in 2004,
and though there was much campus pickup, there was no true team until the next year.
In 2005, JSC Ultimate was resurrected in a big way, working to establish themselves in the JSC community and also
travel to other lands to play disc. The team got together and attended their first tourney in the fall of '05,
"Zen and the Art of Ultimate" III at Green Mountain College, in Poultney, Vermont.
Many players still talk about it as having been one of the sickest tourneys ever.
Spring 2006 saw a few more tourneys, and though they did not win any, JSC beat a few teams,
and even brought home an award! (see above.)
During the whole year, there was much talk about having a team name. (traditionally, Ultimate teams do not assume
the mascot of their school, possibly because most schools are not yet ready to accept Ultimate as being a Varsity level sport)
After much alcohol consumption, they had a few ideas, and somehow decided that their team name might be the JSC AA
(part of it was jersey and tshirt design ideas...unfortunately, those never happened.) However, being a bit controversial,
the moniker didn't stick. The next year, in loving memory of Stephen G Thies, the team called themselves the Notorious JSC
(also in memory of Christopher Wallace, who often graces the field with his ballads.) Each year has seen more players
and a steady improvement in the game, as well as the number of tournaments attended and the overall level of fun.
This year, 2007, the team is looking forward to picking up some new freshman,
and even some of the other students who simply havent played before,
and turning out a disc-savvy, fun loving, Johnson State College Ultimate team.
