Residence Hall Security Upgrades
While the JSC campus is very safe, security remains a top priority for the college. This past summer, Johnson State College undertook a major security upgrade for residence halls. These are the key improvements:
All main entrances to the four dormitories, Arthur Hall, Senators Hall, Governors Hall, and Martinetti Hall, now have a new exterior access system. This system uses "Proximity" readers to grant access to the residents. The student holds their ID near the reader, the reader beeps, lights green and unlocks the door for them. This system is hard-wired back to the office and is controlled by a computer system.
All lobby areas of the dorms have a security camera monitoring the main entrance. These cameras are not monitored. However, the video is saved to a digital video recorder. This video can be reviewed in the event of an incident such as vandalism or another crime.
All individual dorm rooms have a swipe lock installed replacing the older mechanical locksets. These are similar to the ones you might see in a hotel. The student swipes his or her ID in the lock to enter their room. This is a significant safety improvement as the lock stores all entries and attempted entries to the room and can be retrieved in the event it is needed. If a card is lost or stolen it can be quickly, easily and permanently deleted from the lock's memory and a new one issued, eliminating the need to re-key the door.
