Policies and Guidelines
Use of Computing Facilities
1. Only JSC faculty, staff, and students, with a valid user name and password may use JSC computing facilities. Non-JSC users may use the computers located at the Reference Center of the JSC Library.
2. Access and usage of computing facilities is available during posted hours of operation, and only when a lab monitor or faculty member is present. This lab policy is consistent with usage policies of other colleges and universities. It is considered best practice which takes into account the protection of our equipment and the safety of our students.
3. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner consistent
with what is outlined in the JSC Student Handbook.
4.
Compliance with the VSC Computing and Telecommunications Technology Conditions of Use Policy is required.
5. The VSC network may not be used for threatening, obscene, harassing and or libelous conduct. Viewing pornographic material in the computing laboratory may constitute sexual harassment.
6. Sharing or allowing others to use your user name and password is a violation of the VSC Computing and Telecommunications Technology Conditions of Use Policy and is not permitted under any circumstances.
7. Loading unauthorized programs and changing default settings is not permitted.
8. Food and drinks, including empty
containers, are not permitted in the labs.
9. Labs are quiet work areas; we ask that everyone work quietly.
Audio applications may not be used without headphones, and students
are required to provide their own headphones.
10.
The lab telephone is available for quick campus calls only.
11. PCs are available on a first-come, first-served basis, no
exceptions. Lab monitors have the right to make available to another
student any PC left unattended for more than 15 minutes.
12. To ensure the security of individual network accounts and files,
students are required to log out of their accounts before leaving
their workstation.
13. Students are expected to leave the workstation in a neat and orderly manner.
14. Network storage space: Each student is allocated one (1) gigabyte of disk space on the network - students are responsible for managing their own space and backing up their own files. Requests for additional space must be submitted in writing, with two week notice, and include permission by the instructor.
15. Hard disk space: During routine re-imaging or upgrades, ITS staff
WILL DELETE files from the "My Documents" folder or elsewhere on the C:
drive. Therefore, you should always store your files on your own USB
flash drive, or transfer or save them to your space on the network.
16. The printing of envelopes, transparencies or mailing labels is not
permitted on network printers. Contact Sally Searles for alternative
solutions and suggestions.
File Backups
Faculty, staff and students are advised and strongly encouraged to backup important files and documents to their network drives.

Policy for Faculty and Staff E-mail Accounts
E-mail accounts will be provided to all faculty and staff, including
part-time faculty and part-time staff, for the duration of their
contract.
E-mail accounts created for adjunct faculty and temporary or part-time
staff will expire two weeks after their contract expires. Notification
of contract expiration dates for adjunct faculty will be forwarded to
Information Technology Services by the Academic Dean's Office at the
end of the semester or when the contract ends; personnel will submit a
list for part-time or temporary staff when the contract ends.
College-Owned
College computers are provided to the faculty for college-related
purposes only. Increasingly, those purposes include electronic mail
communication among faculty, students and staff, as well as access to
VSC databases available on the Internet for purposes of advising
students.
Faculty requesting to take college-owned computers and peripherals
home must receive written permission from the academic dean.
Typically, permission will be granted only when a faculty member is on
sabbatical or unpaid leave, or participating in special projects of
limited duration that are directly related to the business of Johnson
State College, such as accreditation or policy review.
Conditions Upon Approval
A form detailing the transaction must be submitted to Information
Technology Services. By signing this form, the faculty member agrees
to:
- Provide the make and serial number of all equipment being removed from campus;
- Assume full fiscal and administrative responsibility for all service, parts, supplies, and repairs to equipment while it is off-campus;
- Subscribe to an Internet service provider to ensure electronic contact with the college, if necessary;
- Purchase the necessary peripherals, such as a modem, to enable Internet access; and
- Notify the academic dean and Information Technology Services when the equipment is returned to campus.
