Network Policy

General Policy Guidelines

  • Compliance with the VSC Computing and Telecommunications Technology Conditions of Use Policy is required.
  • Network access is limited to Johnson State College students, faculty, and staff only.
  • Guest access is for guests affiliated with Johnson State College, not for guests using college facilities or network resources informally.
  • Faculty, staff, students, and college-affiliated guests are required to register any personally owned computers and/or Internet accessing devices before connecting to the JSC network — number of registrations is limited to five per person. The Campus Manager banner will pop up automatically when you plug your device into the network and open your browser for the first time. (You can get more information about registering your personal computer here.)

Registering Your Computer and/or Internet Accessing Device

To register personally owned computers and/or Internet accessing devices:

1) Comply with the VSC Conditions of Use Policy.

2) Ensure DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is configured. (Every computer needs an IP (Internet Protocol) address in order to connect to the Internet; DHCP is a program that facilitates the assignment of the IP address. Think of DHCP as the ticketing agent, and the IP address as the ticket - no ticket, no ride. DHCP setup varies between different operating systems, so go to your operating system’s help facility and perform a search on "Network and Internet connections,” or a similar phrase.)

3) Ensure your computer's operating system is one of the following:

For wireless connectivity:

  • Mac OS X v10.3 or later
  • Windows XP SP2+
  • *NIX w/xsupplicant
  • WPA support in wireless access card.

For wired connectivity:

  • Windows Vista
  • Windows XP SP2 or greater
  • Mac OS 10.0 or greater
  • Ethernet 10/100 network interface card

4) Ensure PC operating system is up-to-date with all critical MS patches

5) Ensure anti-virus and spyware blockers are installed and up-to-date

Please Note: Attaching personal network devices, such as wireless access points or routers into any campus network jack are NOT permitted.

Other Information

  • Dumb hubs are permitted. Please be aware that when you register your computer or other Internet device with the Campus Manager network system for the first time, you’ll need to have the device plugged directly into the network drop.
  • All Microsoft Windows security patches are required to be up-to-date and MS automatic update feature enabled.
  • Up-to-date virus and spyware protection is required.
  • All software must be legally owned, including operating system, when connecting to the JSC network.
  • Peer-to-peer (P2P) software and illegal downloading of music and video are NOT permitted.
