What Can I Do With a Liberal Arts/General Studies Major?
Description of the Major
The liberal arts major aspires to continue the Greek ideal of education which encompasses the development of the entire human being. According to this ancient tradition, education requires one to cultivate skill in analytical thinking; an understanding of human civilization, human nature, and the physical universe; and an appreciation of language, art, and culture.
The major in liberal arts is a course of study that draws from disciplines represented by departments across Johnson State College. It is administered by the Liberal Arts Program Committee (LAPC), whose members represent those departments.
The major provides an exciting option for students with broad intellectual interests in the liberal arts. Some students may wish to use this major to build a broad background at the undergraduate level as a foundation for specialized graduate study. Future elementary teachers will benefit from the broad preparation provided by this major. The student and advisor will work closely to plan a set of courses that are related within a coherent structure.
The Liberal Arts major provides students with a broad- based education, allowing them to go into a variety of career fields.
