JSC's Recycled Plastic Gowns Keep 5,750 Bottles Out of Landfills
Colleges in Vermont managed to keep 88,665 plastic bottles out of landfills by purchasing graduation gowns made from Green Weaver material, which is composed of 100% recycled plastic bottles. The Burlington-based Balfour Company, along with cap/gown supplier, Oak Hall says, "The new material resulted in a comfortably soft outfit virtually indistinguishable in color, feel or fit from traditional polyester material. With some 60 million plastic bottles going into U.S. landfills daily, these schools had a chance to turn trash into keepsakes and at the same time made the commitment to turn their campuses green. Students were also given the opportunity of returning their outfits to be recycled and used again in another product."
Johnson State College graduates wore, in the form of the Green Weaver material, 5,750 plastic bottles as they accepted their diplomas and celebrated their academic accomplishment.
