H1N1 Flu Update

October 30, 2009

Dear JSC Community:

The H1N1 flu continues to be classified as widespread in Vermont. While it is difficult to give exact numbers, at least twenty JSC students have had symptoms of influenza-like illness. Some have gone home and others are self-isolating. All students are getting better with usual measures such as rest, fluids, and time.

The college has a limited number of H1N1 nasal vaccine doses for students. This is a live, attenuated vaccine. These vaccines are made just like seasonal flu vaccines and are expected to be as safe and effective as seasonal flu vaccines. The live attenuated intranasal vaccine is sprayed into the nose. It does not contain thimerosal or other preservatives. This vaccine is recommended for all healthy people who are from 2-24 years of age. This flu vaccine is NOT for people with a weakened immune system, or anyone with a long-term health problem such as heart disease, lung disease, kidney or liver disease, metabolic disease such as diabetes, or anemia and other blood disorders. It is also not for people who are allergic to eggs.

Students interested in receiving a vaccine dose should contact Carrie at the Health Center (x1265). In the meantime students, staff, and faculty should do whatever they can to stay healthy. Don't smoke. Don't drink alcohol in excess. Get plenty of rest and eat healthy foods. Cover your cough, and wash your hands well and often. Use the sanitizers around campus. Be well!
