2009 H1N1 Flu Update

October 14, 2009

Dear JSC Community:

A small number of JSC students returned from break this week with flu-like symptoms. Over 90 percent of all flu at this time is the H1N1 flu, so it is likely that we are experiencing a few cases of H1N1 on campus. While the H1N1 virus is highly contagious, the severity is relatively low, with symptoms and duration like the "regular" flu.

  • We have taken a number of steps to prevent the spread of flu at Johnson State, including:
  • Advising students, faculty and staff of the need to practice proper hand and respiratory hygiene (wash hands with soap and water, covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, etc.)
  • Installing hand sanitizers at strategic locations throughout campus and advising everyone to use them at every opportunity.
  • Instructing students to notify us if they come down with flu-like symptoms (fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or more, aches, cough, fatigue, etc.); to self-isolate, rest, and drink plenty of fluids; and to not return to class until fever has subsided for at least 24 hours.
  • Delivering food, water, and fever-reducing medications (ibuprofen or acetaminophen) to affected students who live on campus.

We are working closely with the state health department to monitor flu conditions, keep all illnesses at a minimum at Johnson State College, and determine the appropriate course of action as conditions change. We also have established a working group comprised of health, residential and administrative staff to stay on top of the situation and ensure timely communications to students, faculty and staff.
