JSC To Host Election Series
JOHNSON - High-level Vermont representatives will speak for Presidential candidates in an election series being hosted by Johnson State College this fall.
The series is being organized by Professor Bill Doyle, who teaches at the college and is also a Vermont senator for Washington County. One of his courses is on Vermont politics with an emphasis on presidential campaigns and how they relate to Vermont.
Although the presidential candidates won't personally attend the series, Doyle has found major public figures in Vermont to speak on their behalf.
The schedule includes:
Sept. 10: Barack Obama - Speaker: Vermont State Treasurer Jeb Spaulding
Sept. 17: Rudy Giuliani - Speaker: David Watts, NE Reg. Dir., Giuliani Campaign
Sept. 24: Bill Richardson - Speaker: Colchester Rep. Jim Condon
Oct. 1: John Edwards - Speaker: Former VT Sen. Matt Dunn
Oct. 15: Hillary Clinton - Speaker: Former VT Gov. Madeleine Kunin
All lectures will be at 4:30 p.m. in the Ellsworth Room in the Library and Learning Center at the college.
At a future date, Doyle will announce Vermont representatives who speak on behalf of other presidential candidates.
Doyle will start the series with a lecture by well-known political author Jon Margolis, Monday, August 27, at 4:30 p.m., also in the Ellsworth Room. "Margolis, who will be teaching a course on primaries at the University of Vermont, will discuss the importance of the New Hampshire primary," said Doyle.
"The most important decision we make as a nation is the selection of our president," Doyle continued. "The Vermont primary will not be in play as much this year as in past years because the primaries have been front-loaded by other bigger states.
"But it gives Vermonters and students an opportunity not to see the presidential candidates themselves, but to see these high-profile people from Vermont that can best represent them." Doyle added.
