Ancient Indian Village Discovered at Riverberry Farm in Fairfax
In their continued efforts to contribute to the understanding and preservation of the Lamoille Valley's cultural resources, Johnson State College students have discovered an ancient Indian village at Riverberry Farm in Fairfax.
Indications are that the site was first occupied some 2,000 years ago. Fire (cooking) pits, arrowheads, drills, scrapers, spoke shavers and other finds will be available for news media viewing on Tuesday, June 21, between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., when the students will be excavating the fill from the cooking pits and will be available for interview.
Excavations are under the direction of Corbett Torrence, visiting anthropology instructor at JSC. The discovery was made by students enrolled in a topical seminar titled "Unearth the Past: Field Archaeology on the Lamoille."
