Library News: Fall 2008

December 2008

Over the course of fall semester, Linda Kramer, Ray Brior, and Joe Farara concentrated their collection development efforts on meeting the research needs of current and proposed first year seminars. As a result, a sizable number of titles, both in hard copy and digital formats, have been added to the general circulating and reference collections.

The library has also purchased all titles under consideration for next year's Common Reading Initiative.

Jo Anne Edwards surveyed business students about the features they'd like to see added to the library's Facebook site. What's considered most desirable by students is already available on the library's Web site, which lacks the social dimension that Facebook offers. While many of these features would require customized applications, Jo Anne will be adding stand-alone functions over the next few months.

Linda Kramer has been balancing the daily demands of her job with a number of college- and system-wide initiatives. In addition to her usual role as the library's lead information
literacy instructor, where she has done sessions for many of the college's First Year Seminars, Linda has continued to replenish the library's Flickr site with photographs of student research activity. Linda also revised the assessment section of TILT, our online information literacy tutorial, for inclusion in the JSC Graduation Standards MyJSC site. As a  member of the E-Resources Working Group of the VSC Libraries, Linda prepared comparative studies of subscription databases, including their scope and costs.

Joe Farara continues his work as an executive board member of the Vermont Consortium of Academic Libraries. In his role as Director of VSC Library Planning, he has arranged a number of upcoming vendor presentations concerning open source integrated library systems, as well as ones pertaining to e-resources. He also has been involved with the rollout of WJSC, the campus radio station. He's currently serving as a member of the search committee to identify a successor to Chancellor Clarke.

September 2008

As part of the library's commitment to support the college's Common Reading Initiative, Joe Farara and Ray Brior have assembled a comprehensive reading and listening collection
related to New Orleans and Louisiana. The list can be found here

Linda Kramer has revised a number of the library's video tutorials to reflect changes in database interfaces and content. The tutorials are available at: http://www.jsc.edu/library/GuidesAndHelp/

With the growing demand from students for academic content, the library occasionally bumps up against copyright restrictions related to interlibrary loan. Alice Kirk is researching a number of fee-based document delivery services to alleviate the problem. The library intends to have a solution in place before the end of October.
