Library News & Reviews:
Fall 2013

National Information Literacy Awareness Month

In October 2009, President Obama issued a proclamation rallying all educators who share responsibility for teaching critical information skills in the 21st century. Read the proclamation on the White House website and learn more about the annual promotion at the National Forum on Information Literacy website.

Throughout October, Willey Library staff will be celebrating National Information Literacy Awareness Month with announcements on the WJSC 90.7 radio station.  Tune in to hear a playlist with a search and rescue theme suggested by academic librarians from around the country. Let us know if you can identify with any of these songs when you are in the throes of a research project and need the help of your librarians.

Mission Accomplished Visit the reference area of the library to check out the exhibit (from books to bytes) and also view photos of "Mission Accomplished" on our Flickr site.

Information Literacy at JSC

Librarians at the Willey Library recognize that information literacy is a critical skill for academic success, and we offer faculty a variety of information literacy strategies that will make their students more effective at college-level research. To learn more, please contact Instructional Services Librarian Linda Kramer at or Extension 1275.

New Reference Librarian at the Willey Library

Please join the staff of the Willey Library in welcoming Lisa Kent to its ranks as Access Services Librarian.

Lisa is a Magna cum Laude graduate of the University of Vermont, and was recently awarded a Master’s degree in Education from Johnson State College. She’s now pursuing a Master’s degree in Information Science from Kent State University.

In addition to providing reference services to our residential population, Lisa will be the lead contact for students and faculty in the External Degree Program. If you would like to make use of her expertise, Lisa’s office can be found on the second floor of the library, LLC 226. She also can be reached at, as well as X1266.

Professional Activities

Instructional Services Librarian Linda Kramer attended the American Library Association national conference in Chicago and returned with fresh ideas for enhancing instructional services. She was at the session where the Association of College and Research Libraries recognized University of Arizona librarians with the coveted Innovation Award for developing open source software to streamline production of online tutorials. Linda has worked with VSC Systems Administrator John Schrader to adapt the freely available “Guide on the Side” software and has begun updating library tutorials for demonstrating database search techniques.

Ray Brior, Technical Services Librarian, is in his second term as the Chair of the Vermont Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom Committee.

Faculty Librarian Joe Farara began his fourth term as the President of the Vermont Consortium of Academic Libraries. He is also the Vermont State Colleges’ representative to the Vermont Online Library.

As we launch the academic year, we look forward to working with our new and returning students, faculty and staff.

Best wishes for a productive semester,

The JSC Willey Library Staff
