Leaving a Legacy to Johnson State College
Johnson State College has served Vermont for nearly two centuries, educating teachers and community leaders since 1828. JSC is a unique public institution, providing access to excellent academic programs to all Vermonters, including many students who are the first generation in their families to attend college. Your bequest to the college will live on, providing, through endowment interest every year, support for students and excellence in education at JSC into the future.
Leaving a Bequest
A bequest is a gift made through a provision in your will. Bequests offer an opportunity to support an organization with a gift made at the end of your lifetime. Often a bequest also provides significant estate tax savings. A donation of $10,000 and more can establish a named endowment for purposes specified by the donor. Gifts of any amount can be added to existing endowments, such as the Alumni Scholarship Endowment, the President’s Excellence in Teaching and Learning Endowment, or the Library Endowment. See the full list of JSC’s endowments here
Life Income Gifts
A Charitable Gift Annuity allows you to give assets to a trust designed to pay you an income for the remainder of your life, and if you so choose, for the lifetime of a spouse. At the completion of the Trust (at the end of your lifetime), the Charitable Gift Annuity becomes part of the endowment that you have specified. Donations of $10,000 and above can establish a Charitable Gift Annuity.
You can designate Johnson State College as the beneficiary for a portion of your retirement funds, which usually requires nothing more than contacting your financial institution requesting a change of beneficiary.
Money accumulated in pensions, profit sharing, 401K funds and IRAs often constitute a substantial portion of your assets, and could be highly taxed upon your death. Left to a charity, your planned assets can escape both state and federal income taxes and entitle your estate to a charitable tax donation.
