Austin McCormack Memorial Maple Tree

Location: Near the Sculpture Garden on the entrance road. (Map - 16) Plaque reads: Austin McCormack. Where there’s hope of a tree if it be cut down, that it will sprout again and the tender branches thereof will not cease. John 14-7. Background: Austin was a junior and a business major when he passed away June 21, 1988.

Daniel Holmes Memorial Oak Tree

Location: Near Sculpture Park on the main entry road, on Grassy Knoll. (Map - 8) Plaque Reads: In Memory of Daniel Holmes Class of 2000, January 16, 1978 to October 2, 2004.  May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.  Placed November 20, 2004 by his classmates and friends.

Eric Faucher Memorial Tree

Location: Sculpture Park on main entry road (Map - 5)

Plaque reads: In loving memory of our brother Eric F. Faucher 1976-2000 Class of 2003 “I will not let go of myself until the death of my body.” Placed September 16, 2002

Ginny Fitzgerald Apple Tree

Location: Outside Martinetti Hall. (Map - 28) Plaque Reads: Ginny Ebare Fitzgerald, Class of 1991, JSC Staff 1989-1998; JSC planted this apple tree in memory of and tribute to our friend and colleague. Planted June 1999.

Ian Conner Sharkey Memorial Spruce Tree

Location: Above Dibden (Lower) Pond on the knoll. Location: Behind Martinetti Hall. (Map - 23) Plaque Reads: In memory of Jennifer Lee Puffer.  Planted in loving memory by her friends.

Jon Buroff Memorial Trees

Location: Two American Plum Trees above Minaert Fields, beside VAC parking lot. (Map - 30) Plaque Reads: In Memory of Jonathan Peter Buroff, Class of 2010, 1986-2009. A student and friend of Johnson State College, who brought a livelihood to the campus and was especially alive in the outdoors. “In one of the stars/I shall be living/In one of them I shall be laughing/As so it will be/As if all the stars/Were laughing/When you look/At the sky at night” (from The Little Prince - Antoine de Saint-Exupery). Placed Fall 2009.

John Greenfield Memorial Tree

Location: A Ginkgo tree along the path between Dewey Campus Center and Martinetti Hall. (Map - 6) Plaque reads: In memory of John Greenfield, This tree is planted by his family and friends. Placed in May 1991.

John J. Gunson III Memorial Tree

Location: A Mountain Ash in the Sculpture Park on main entry road.  (Map - 7)

Plaque reads:  This tree is planted in memory of John “GQ” Gunson III by his friends. Placed in 1987.

Jon Steven Pringle Memorial Sugar Maple Tree and Marble Bench

Location: Sculpture Park along the main entrance road. (Map - 21 & 22)

Plaque Reads: The Vermont Sugar Maple was planted in loving memory of Jon Steven Pringle.  Steve, formerly of Essex, was a business major at JSC.  On June 8, 1990, a fire destroyed a home in Johnson where Steve lived with his twin brother Scott.  Steve’s efforts to alert Scott and four other students assisted their escape.  During the summer months Steve and Scott worked in landscaping in the Stowe area.  This bench is dedicated in memory of Steve Pringle for all his love and concern for all his friends.  June 11, 1990.  From all his landscaping buddies. Placed in June 1990.

Joshua John Lee Memorial Tree

Plaque reads: In Memory of Joshua John Lee.

Background: Josh was a student who entered Johnson in 1994 and had an untimely death in 1996.

Plaque reads:  Kam Malon, Class of 1999.  “The sun is gone, but I have a light.” Placed by his friends and classmates in the Spring of 2004.

Karen Hovland Memorial Trees

Location: Weeping Larch Trees in the Peace Garden behind the LLC. (Map - 9)

Plaque reads: In Memory of Karen Hovland Class of 1998.  For 15 years as a member of the JSC Staff until her untimely passing in August 2002. These trees were planted in her memory by her colleagues and friends. Planted in Spring of 2004.

Keri Sherlock Memorial Willow Tree

Madison Grace Stocks Memorial Playground and Bench

Location: Near community garden at College Apartments. (Map - 32) Plaque reads: This playground was built in memory of Madison Grace Stocks June 4, 1999-October 8, 2000 “We will see you in every smiling face and hear you in every child’s giggle” We will love you always, your friends and family.

Margaret G. Ottum Memorial Oak Tree

Location: Overlooking the mountains and athletic fields, visible from the VAC Parking Lot. (Map-18)

Plaque reads: This Oak is planted in Memory of Professor Emeritus Margaret G. Ottum 1935-2006.  Margaret Ottum taught at JSC from 1982 to 2003, pioneered the environmental science/natural resources major, and inspired countless through her courage, tenacity, and achievements.  “Be like a tree in pursuit of your cause.  Stand firm, grip hard, and trust upward.  Bend to the winds but do not break.” Placed in the Summer of 2006.

Peace Garden

Location: Behind Library and Learning Center, behind hedge. (Map - 29)

Plaque reads: Buddhist Peace Garden, dedicated 3 Sept 2002 in hopes of peace for our world. Asian Culture Grant from Freeman Foundation.

Plaque reads: In Memory of Rochelle Lockman, January 16, 1984 - March 21, 2004.  “When I must leave you for a little while, please do not grieve and shed wild tears... and never, never be afraid to die.  For I am waiting for you in the sky!” Placed by her classmates and friends in the Spring of 2004.

Sarah Lizotte Memorial Lilac Tree

Location: In the little garden between Martinetti Hall and the path to Arthur Hall. (Map - 12)

Plaque reads: In Memory of Sarah E. Lizotte, December 24, 1974-August 28, 2001. Hospitality and Tourism Management Major, Class of 2002.  Many people will walk in and out of our lives but only true friends like Sarah leaves footprints in our hearts.  Never shall we forget the time we spent with you. Sharon Burns Bench

Location:  Between Bentley Hall and the Library Learning Center. (Map - 4)

Plaque reads: Given in the name of Sharon Burns in appreciation and observance of her 25 years of continuous service in the Physical Plant Department. Placed June 1995.

Background: Sharon Burns was on the JSC Physical Plant staff from 1971-2003, and was responsible for the beauty of the College’s flower gardens and plantings, among other duties.

Tricia E. Pettis Memorial Bench

Plaque reads: This bench is dedicated in memory of Trish Pettis for her love of sports and her love for all her friends.  Placed by her teammates and friends in 1996.

Elizabeth Ann Wiren Apple Trees

Location: Above campus apartments near the College Gardens

Plaque reads: In Memory of  Elizabeth Ann Wiren (Nov. 8, 1967 – March 6, 2011)

Perennial JSC Student, 2005 onward; President of Green Solutions (JSC Student Environmental Club) and inspired founder of this garden, Liz stayed rooted to our campus community even as she branched out to places beyond. These apple trees were donated and planted in her memory

in the spring of 2011 by her colleagues and friends.
