This endowment was established by Dr. Carol Story (Class of 1969), the third generation of her family to graduate from Johnson. She is a nationally recognized expert in the field of education for gifted and talented children, and taught in the JSC Education Department for 17 years (1987-2004). Following retirement, she founded the Green Mountain Center for Gifted Education, Inc. and chaired the 2005 Planning Committee for the New England Conference on Gifted Education held at Killington. She was awarded her Doctorate in Philosophy, in Curriculum and Instruction, from the University of Connecticut in 1984. She received her Master of Arts in Early Childhood Education in 1974 and her Bachelor of Science degree in 1969, both from Johnson State College. She is a past president and current member of the Vermont Council for Gifted Education, and a member of the National Association for Gifted Children. In 2002, she won the New England Gifted Education Association Award for Leadership. She has directed the annual summer Talent Development Institute at JSC since 1998, and won a "Goals for 2000 Gifted Education Grant." She was a leader in numerous college committees, Chair of the 2002-03 Faculty Development Committee, member of the JSC Women's Council, and Chair of the Faculty Assembly (1990-92). She is past president of the JSC Alumni Association, and won the JSC Alumni Association’s 1989 Distinguished Alumni Award and the 2004 Distinguished Faculty Award.

Her mother Barbara Graves Story, Class of 1942 and 1981 (BA) was a JSC alumna, as was her grandmother Carolyn Bover Graves, Class of 1915.  This endowment was established in 2006.

The Graves/Story Endowment Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students in elementary or early childhood education, with a preference for students specializing in gifted and talented education. It was first awarded in 2008.
