Donald and Susan Collins Scholarship Endowment
Donald E. Collins ’64 and Susan (Lancaster) Collins ’70 are outstanding Vermont citizens with long careers in education. Don holds a M.Ed. from the University of Maine, and his C.A.G.S. from UVM. He retired as Superintendent of Schools in 1997, after serving 32 years as a teacher, counselor, principal, and superintendent, and having completed 14 years as Superintendent of Schools for Fairfax and Georgia School Districts. He was Senator for Franklin County and Alburg from 2002 to 2008, and a member of the Vermont State College Board from 2003 to 2008. In 2009, he was appointed to the Vermont State Board of Education. Susan earned her B.A. in Education from JSC and her M.Ed. from the University of Vermont. After many years as an outstanding elementary school teacher, in 1989 she accepted the position of school librarian for the Swanton Elementary School. In 2006, she was awarded the prestigious Lyman C. Hunt Award by the Vermont Council on Reading. Both Susan and Don have served as president of the Vermont Council on Reading - the first husband and wife to both have held this honor. They have also both served on the JSC Alumni Council, with Don serving a term as President in the 1970s. Sue has served on the Alumni Council since 1998, and is a member of the Executive Committee. Don was awarded the Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1990. This endowment was established in 2008.
The Susan and Don Collins Scholarship is for a full-time student during his/her teaching semester, preferably a graduate of CCV, who is a Vermonter and shows much promise in and dedication to teaching.
