Lady Badgers Takes

3rd Place in NAC West

By Charlie Viana

JSC finished the regular season in third place in the NAC West Division with an overall record of 11-14 and a conference record of 7-8.

On Tuesday, Feb. 26, JSC traveled up to Bangor, Maine to face the East Division’s second place team, Husson College, in the NAC quarter-finals. The perimeter shooting of the Eagles paced them to a comfortable half-time lead. The Eagles shot 54 percent from the field and a staggering 63 percent from the arc en route to a 43-28 half-time lead.

The Badgers came out firing in the second half and outscored the Eagles 37-32, but it wasn’t enough as Husson moved onto the NAC semi-finals with a 75-65 victory. Leading the way for JSC was senior Jenna Lewis, who finished with 21 points, five rebounds and handed out five assists.

Junior Casey Rusin tossed in 14 points and sophomore Claudia Martineau added 13 points and pulled down five rebounds. For Lewis, it was her final game in a JSC uniform.

In their regular season finale, JSC traveled to Castleton State to face off against the first place Spartans on Friday, Feb. 22. Hanging right with the Spartans, JSC was down 20-19 at halftime. A cold JSC and a red-hot CSC saw the Lady Badgers finish their regular season with a 54-30 loss. The only player in double figures for JSC was Lewis, who finished with 16 points.

In a rescheduled game from Friday, Feb. 1, JSC hosted Bay Path College on Monday, Feb. 9. JSC saw themselves trailing 24-23 at the half and came out of the locker room firing away on their way to a 60-49 victory. Leading JSC was Lewis with 19 points, 10 rebounds and dishing out seven assists. Rusin collected 17 points, including four three-pointers, and sophomore Sara Dolan had a double-double with 11 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

JSC wrapped up their weekend home-stand by hosting the Blazers of Elms College on Saturday, Feb. 16. JSC would see senior guard Jenna Lewis play in the final home game of her career. Lewis had an outstanding three-year career with the Badgers, contributing in every aspect of the game.

Lewis is among the school’s all-time leaders in points, assists, and steals. She is fifth in career points with 932, third with 255 assists, and fifth with 148 steals. She has been named captain each of her three years and has started all 72 games she has played in. Rightfully so.

JSC captured a big win in senior day 53-47, after only scoring five points at the half. Rusin led the Badger attack with 16 points and three steals. Dolan collected 14 points to go along with nine rebounds and four steals. Lewis had a fine all-around game with 11 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.

JSC was home to face Becker College, which was sitting one spot ahead of the ladies in the standings on Friday, Feb. 15. The Hawks’ defense stifled JSC throughout the night on their way to a 48-36 victory.

Leading the way for JSC was Martineau, who scored 12 points and hauled down seven rebounds. Dolan added eight points and five rebounds, while Lewis tossed in six points and grabbed eight rebounds.

JSC finished up their conference trip to Maine with a Saturday afternoon contest against the Mariners of Maine Maritime on Feb. 9. JSC had a slow start to their first half, but battled nicely throughout only to fall short to the Mariners, 67-58. Leading the way for JSC was Dolan, who tallied career highs in points and rebounds. Dolan finished with 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Rusin added 13 points and two steals; Lewis contributed 10 points and swiped four steals.

On Friday, Feb. 8, the Lady Badgers traveled a long and grueling trip up to Bangor, where they were up against Husson College. Another slow start saw the ladies facing a double-digit deficit early, and a late comeback was not enough as Husson held on to a 73-63 victory. Lewis led JSC with 21 points and handed out four assists. Lewis connected on 16 for 19 from the free throw line. Rusin ended the night with 16 points to go along with three steals, and freshmen Emily Hassard tossed in 10 points and collected five rebounds.
