You are already in college, and the decision is always yours to make. Either you are here for a piece of over priced paper proving that you graduated from college, or you are here for an education.
If you are here for the degree, your college life could be pretty relaxing; there isn’t much effort to meet the requirement for a passing grade. You could kill the extra time any way you wanted to. For those of you who chose to come here for an education, you should go out and get involved in your dorm, or as a volunteer in a school program, or non-profit organization, competing in sports etc.
Abrahamowicz (1988) studied college involvement, perceptions, and satisfaction: a study of membership in student organizations and found that getting involved in college encourages broader involvement with the institution, satisfaction with the college experience, and an overall better perception of the institution. He stated that involvement is the most important condition for improving undergraduate education.
The importance of getting involved in college clubs and organizations depends on the person you are. Research indicates that participation in college organizations and similar out of class student activities is related to increased skill development and other dimensions of personal growth (Abrahamowicz, 1988).
Edward Thurmond is a great student at JSC. On top of his busy school schedule, he is involved with performing arts and the SGA Treasurer. He spends the majority of his free time practicing new performances with his group. Before I got to know him, I was always wondering how he could be so confident and professional in delivery of his presentations in classes. After I watched a couple of his performances at Dibden, I realized that his involvement in the performing arts had greatly increased his presenting skills in front of a group of strangers.
Courtney Gabaree, another great student here at JSC, started the Global Partnership: Student For Children’s Rights club last year. Under her leadership and the great participation of every club member, the club hosted numerous events and raised some funds to support the charity which they believe will benefit children. On March 28, they will be hosting a Hunger Banquet at the Shape Multi-Gym. Come and learn how unbalanced world economics are. What Courtney is learning from school with the involvement she is in, has been growing her leadership skills.
By combining the skills you develop through your involvement in the school community with the knowledge you learn from your classes, you are training yourself to develop your potential. There are numerous club activities, SGA events, and shows going on every week. So whatever your interests or reasons to get involved, there is probably an activity that suits you. If not, the Student Government Association can help you get in touch with similarly interested students to create a new opportunity that’s right for you.
Fulfill your education while you are still here at the college.
Get Involved.
