It was to be the last college-town forum held in the Base Lodge as it stands, said JSC President Barbara Murphy during her state of the college address. The 2008 presidential election will be a historic one for many reasons. Reasons for this include our first semi-national primary, the fact that the first time in American history a woman, Hillary Clinton,
and an African-American, Barack Obama, have an opportunity to be president, and the fact that there will be a record turnout assisted by a huge turnout by women, African-Americans, and young people. Certainly the nation has never had so many states having a primary on the same
day.
The presidential election of 2008 has already captured the attention of the entire world. “Newsweek” writes: “The world watches with interest in the American presidential race, and European communities are weighing in on the most watchful race in decades.”
The Vermont State College system is asking for an 8 percent increase in funding this year, a request that, considering Governor James Douglas’ request for a 2.5 percent increase, will likely be rejected by the Vermont Legislature.
According to Vermont State Colleges Chancellor Robert Clarke, the requested increase would still place Vermont at the bottom of state support for higher education. Currently, only 17 percent of the Vermont State Colleges’ operating budget comes from state funds, which are appropriated by the Legislature.
Staff, students, faculty, and administration gathered on Friday, Feb. 8, to honor Academic Advisor Christie Leone, who is leaving the Johnson State College Career and Advising Center after eight years to open up her own daycare center in North Hyde Park.
This will be Leone’s first step into the small business world. Although she has no experience in running a daycare, Leone is a mother of two children – a 16-month-old daughter and a 5-year-old son – and according to her, the new business will be a good fit for her family.
JSC’s Writing Proficiency Exam will be administered Thursday, March 13, from 7 till 10 p.m., and Sunday, March 16, from 9 a.m. till noon. Exam questions will be available on the Portal next week, as well as a schedule of prep sessions. Students enrolled in Exposition and Analysis are required to TAKE the exam in order to receive a grade in the class, but their passing or failing will have no effect on the final grade. Students who fail to take the exam will receive an incomplete in the class, but they will receive their grades once they have attempted it.
The 15th annual JSC Phone-a-Thon, an effort to solicit donations from alumni to benefit the JSC general fund, will begin March 9 and run through the end of the month.
As in the past, students will be making the calls, according to Associate Director of Development and Alumni Relations Evan Smith, who is in charge of running the event this year. “Primarily it’s to connect with alumni, parents, and friends and to seek annual fund donations,” he said.
