Stearns Project Affects SHAPE

By Charlie Viana

“We are trying to be flexible and team players,” says SHAPE Facility Coordinator and Intramurals Director Wendy Brothers, regarding changes in the building to accommodate the Stearns renovations project. “There is going to be a lot of traffic in and out of the building.”

As the Stearns project gets underway, SHAPE is beginning to absorb some of the resulting dislocations, with the prospect of more to come.

During February break, the mailroom and mailboxes will be shifted from their longtime location in Stearns to SHAPE. Racquetball Court One, which is located on the lower level of SHAPE, will be the new location for student’s individual mailboxes. The equipment room, which is located between the varsity gym and the multi-gym, will house the interim mailroom, where students will be able to pick up their packages.

The equipment room will be back in its original location around the end of November, 2008 (the anticipated completion date of the renovations).

Around June 15, the dining room will be relocated to the multi-gym, but plans call for it to be back in Stearns by the start of the fall semester.

The Dewey 178 classroom, moved to accommodate the new bookstore, is now located in the mezzanine classroom above the multi-gym, causing the closing of the rock climbing wall.

Spinning classes, which were held in the mezzanine, are now being held in the rock climbing wall area.
“As the college goes, each department has got to make sacrifices,” says Assistant Athletic Director and Head Men’s Basketball Coach Michael Osborne. “I am very excited for the end result, and it is going to be a good one for the college.”
