The First Annual Shiny Jib Fest

By Alex Hill

Shiny JibSnowboarders and skiers gathered at the JSC snowboard terrain park to show off their best tricks at the first annual Shiny Jib Fest on Saturday, Dec. 8.

The event was somewhat of a rarity, because most colleges don’t allow outsiders at rail jams due to insurance issues. However, there was only one competitor at the event who was not a student at JSC, Skyler Christmen, a Lamoille Union senior.

Skiers and riders began warming up on the newly renovated terrain park between 11:30 and 12:00. It was a toasty 35 degrees during warm ups, which made for soft, sticky snow and some slow going.

However, by the time the competition started, the temperature had dropped and a little additional snow covered up the soft, sticky surface with a fresh coat of light fluff. This made the whole park faster and the rails easier to jib. About 15 riders and three skiers competed.

The competition was set up in a jam style. Boarders got 20 minutes to take as many runs on each feature as they could. Skiers and girls got 15 minutes to do the same. There were two judges. Mike Murphy judged the skiers, while Mitch Potter judged the snowboarders

Competition featured the flat box, shotgun rail, flat to down box, and the up box.

Skiers and riders were judged on style, consistency, and degree of risk taken. The finalists for snowboarding included Skyler Christmen, Mike Murphy, Ross Pollak, Mike Bardis, Jake Wells, and Max Pott. For Skiers it was Jon Preuss, Mitch Potter, and Erik Tilburg.

First place for riders went to Mike Murphy, who received a new pair of bindings. Skyler Christmen placed second and won a pass to Smugglers Notch. Third place won a pass to Whaleback Mt.

Preuss won first place for skiers, and received a pass to Jay Peak. Mitch Potter placed second, winning two day-passes to Jay Peak. Eric Tilburg took third place and won a variety of accessories and apparel.

Although this event was planned to promote the new terrain park, it was also a tribute to JSC Junior Shania Whitaker’s brother, Cheyenne “Shiny” Whitaker (25), who lost his life to an unknown heart condition while snowboarding at Killington ? hence the first annual Shiny Jib Fest.

Shania Whitaker was mainly responsible for getting local companies and resorts to sponsor this event. She wrote letters about the Johnson Ski/Snowboard Club and about her brother’s role in giving her a love for snowboarding and jibbing.
She recruited Jay Peak, Bolton Valley, Board Barn, Smugglers Notch, Hannaford Brothers, No School Snowboard Shop, Embasi Board/Clothing, Surf The Earth Snowboards, and Burton to sponsor the event.
