Britanny Rhoads on: Good Health

Brittany RhoadsWith the grocery store magazines showing zoomed in shots of celebrity cellulite on sandy beaches, and stick-thin heiresses spending daddy’s money, it’s tough to have a firm grasp on what is healthy. A size four isn’t necessarily healthy, and a size ten isn’t always unhealthy.

Healthy, as described by dictionary.com means “possessing or enjoying good health or a sound and vigorous mentality.” Like that’s helpful! You mean, being healthy means enjoying good health? Gettouta town! See, not even the dictionary can define what it means to be healthy. I certainly can’t tell you what being healthy means for you; that’s something that a doctor or nutritionist can decide. I can, however, tell you what is unhealthy. Here are just five things that are unhealthy:

1. Binge drinking and drug abuse. Anyone who tells you eight beers a night is good for you is already drunk, and I don’t think I actually need to explain why drugs are bad for you.

2. Eating only fried foods. Regardless of a high metabolism and size 2 jeans, if you’re only eating fried chicken and pizza, your body is craving vitamins.

3. No exercise. It doesn’t matter if it’s walking down the hill to McClelland Hall, going to the gym, snowboarding or having a good romp around in the boudoir- it all burns extra calories.

4. Not drinking enough water. Okay, so drinking a glasss of water eight times a day may seem like a lot, but throw a slice of lime or lemon in the Nalgene bottle with a squirt of honey and you’ll be set to go.

5. Getting too little, or too much sleep. It differs from person to person. Some people may only need six hours of sleep, some need seven or eight, but if you find yourself tired after 10 or 11 hours of sleep without some major rigorous activities, you might want to place a call to your health center or doctor’s office.

So it’s fairly simple: stay active, drink water, eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full and get a little sunshine. Ladies, love your bodies. Treat them with love and kindness; they’re the only ones you’ll get in this lifetime.

Also, a side note to the gentlemen: do you feel left out? Most of these articles are specifically geared toward women. If you’d like something directed towards men’s health, drop us an email at basementmedicine@gmail.com

Have a safe and healthy holiday season!

Until next time,
