Skidmore Sweeps Johnson
Saratoga Springs, N.Y. (April 14, 2009)
Skidmore College sophomore Charlotte Evans (Pawling, N.Y.) went 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored to lead the Thoroughbred softball team to a sweep of Johnson State College, 8-0, 9-1, Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.
Skidmore has won seven straight and improves to 14-7. Johnson State falls to 5-6.
Skidmore held a one-run lead in game one until the fourth inning, when junior Lauren Dinsdale (Harrington Park, N.J.) led off with a triple and scored on a Badger error. Freshman Tara DeGeorge (Seaford, N.Y.) followed with a double and was scored on an error to put Skidmore up 3-0. Evans then hit her second homerun of the season to knock in two runs to go into the fifth inning with a five run lead.
The home squad tacked on three more runs in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run single from junior Ari Manstein (Elkins Park, Pa.) to force the eight-run rule and end the game.
Evans finished 2-for-3 in the opener with two RBI. Dinsdale was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Freshman Sam Crose (Assonet, Mass.) scattered three hits over five innings, issuing no walks and firing two strikeouts to improve to 12-5 on the mound.
Skidmore came out quickly in the nightcap jumped out to a six-run lead in the first behind a double from Evans and an RBI single from freshman Lauren Bernstein (White Plains, N.Y.).
Johnson State’s lone run of the day came in the second inning when senior Ashley Allegrini (Cos Cob, Conn.) drove in Brittany Lumsden to draw the Thoroughbred lead to 6-1.
Bernstein came up big in the fifth when she doubled to left center field to score two runs and put the final at 9-1. Bernstein finished 2-for-3 with three RBI in the nightcap.
Freshman Molly Canavan was solid on the mound for Skidmore in game two, giving up just three hits in five innings pitched with four strikeouts.
Johnson will host Vermont Technical College on Thursday at 3:30 pm while Skidmore plays Cazenovia College in its next doubleheader on April 17 at 3:30 p.m.
