Johnson Sweeps Mariners, Moves Into NAC Playoff Picture

CASTINE, Maine (April 25, 2009)

 

The Johnson State softball team won a pair of games at Maine Maritime on Saturday defeating the Mariners 5-3 and 12-5 in North Atlantic Conference action. The Badgers improve to 9-14 overall and 4-8 in the NAC and move past Green Mountain College for the sixth and final NAC playoff spot.  MMA falls to 3-19, 1-11 NAC.

 

GAME ONE:

Johnson State got the scoring started in the third sending two runners across the plate to take a 2-0 lead. MMA answered back in the bottom of the fourth with three runs taking a 3-2 lead. The Badgers tied the game in the top of the sixth on a Lauren Wallace (Hyde Park, VT) home run then got two more in the top of the seventh to put away the Lady Mariners and win the opening game of the double-header. MMA stranded 10 runners in the game. 

 

Megan Russell (Peru, ME), Mallery Stanley (Standish, ME), Nicole Poland (Damariscotta, ME), Dana Houghton (Lee, ME), and Ashley Hunt (Waldoboro, ME) all collected two hits for MMA. Stanley, Poland, and Kayla Higgins (Sullivan, ME) each had an RBI. Mallery Stanley took the loss for MMA giving up 12 hits and walking four in the loss.

 

The Badgers cranked out 12 hits, getting two from Julie Gervais (Enosburg Falls, VT), Allie Cunningham (Manchester, NH) and Lauren Wallace while Kayla Golfin (Castleton, VT) collected three hits. Cunningham got the win for the Badgers allowing just three runs on 12 hits over seven innings while striking out five MMA batters.

 

GAME TWO:

In the second game, Johnson State jumped on MMA scoring runs in the first six innings of play, cruising to the 12-5 win. Allie Cunningham led the offensive attack going 3 for 5 with three RBI’s and a home run.

 

MMA collected 12 hits for the second straight game but was playing catch-up all game and couldn’t overcome seven errors in the field on their way to the loss. Mallery Stanley and Kayla Higgins each collected two hits each while Nicole Poland had a team high two RBI’s. Stanley took the loss, dropping to 3-19 on the season, giving up 12 hits and seven walks in the game.

 

Heidi Bellemore (Lowell, MA) and Kayla Golfin joined Cunningham with three hits while Bellemore and Julie Gervais each chipped in with two RBI’s. Gervais got the win, scattering 12 hits over seven innings, but didn’t allow a walk and struck out six batters.
