Husson Sweeps JSC; Badgers Land in NAC Playoffs

BANGOR, Maine (April 26, 2008)

The Husson University Eagles ended their North Atlantic Conference regular season play with two wins over Johnson State on Sunday afternoon.  Husson defeated Johnson 12-2 in the first game and 20-2 in the second.  With the wins Husson finishes ranked number one in the NAC with a perfect 14-0 record.  The Eagles improve to 22-13 overall.  Johnson State falls to 4-10 in NAC play and 9-16 overall.  Even with the losses, JSC clinched the #6 seed in the NAC playoffs due to a pair of Green Mountain losses to Thomas College.

In the first game, after a one, two, three inning in the top of the first, the Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the inning.  Megan Bradstreet (So. Warren, ME) started the attack with a one out bunt single, and reached all the way to third on a throwing error.  Cassie Berry would then rope a single up the middle, scoring Bradstreet from third.  After a bloop single by Nicky Sargent (So. Sullivan, ME), Sarah Risser (Fy. Brewer, ME) hit a double to dead center field that scored both Berry and Sargent.  Rachel Voicechovski (Fy. Jefferson, NJ) would end the scoring for the Eagles in the first with a RBI single, as the Eagles took a 4-0 advantage.

The Badgers used patience at the plate in the top of the second as they scored one run on one hit and three walks.  However in the bottom of the inning the Eagles would respond with three runs, highlighted by a two run homerun by Sargent that bounced off the scoreboard in left field.  In the third Bradstreet would hit a RBI single to center and Berry would double as the Eagles scored three more runs, taking a 10-1 lead.

Husson went on to add two runs in the fourth on a two run double by Brianna Webster (Fy. Belfast, ME).  The Eagles would go on to eight run rule the Badgers in the fifth, as they won 12-2.

In the second game, the Badgers got on the board first on a RBI single to right field by Morgan Rogerson (Fy. Hardwick, VT).  The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the inning.  Webster hit a double to center field and moved to third on a pass ball.  Cassie Berry (Jr. Newcastle, ME) then hit Webster in on a sacrifice fly to left field.  After a Sargent double, Risser singled home Sargent, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead after one inning of play.

Jamiee Knowles (Fy. Brewer, ME) led off the bottom of the second with a single to left field.  Voicechovski then stepped to the plate and ripped a double, scoring Knowles all the way from first.  After a fielder’s choice, Cameron ripped a double to the left-center gap.  Webster then had a infield single to load the bases.  Berry would come up big; roping a double to center that would score two.  Sargent would then hit a two run single to left.  Cameron would get back up in the inning and crush a grand slam that hit the scoreboard.  The Eagles would end up scoring 12 runs on 10 hits and one error in the second inning.

Johnson State will travel to Maine-Farmington on Tuesday afternoon for the North Atlantic Conference Quarterfinals.  The Badgers run to the playoffs in Head Coach Robert Gervais' first season has been truly impressive following a 1-29 season in 2008.
