JSC Softball Drops Pair at Gordon to Open Season
Wenham, Mass. (March 28, 2009)
Johnson State saw Gordon sweep the Badgers season-opening doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Wenham. The Scots took game 1, 9-1 and followed that up with a 13-7 victory in game 2.
GAME 1
Pitcher Sarah Grimes dominated in game 1, allowing only 2 hits and 1 run, while
Sarah Giberson collected 3 hits and Kim Levinsky, Elisabeth Cheeseman, and Leah Granat all had 2 hits apiece. The game was called after 5 innings with Gordon ahead by 8 runs. JSC's Emily Sullivan (Hollis, Maine/Bonny Eagle) drove in the lone Badger run with an RBI single in the third inning. Allie Cunningham (Manchester, N.H./Central) took the loss for Johnson allowing 11 hits in four innings while striking out three.
GAME 2
Game 2 featured much more offense, as Gordon piled up 16 hits, paced by 4 more from Levinsky and 3 more from Cheeseman. Kristen Terry knocked in 4 runs. Leah Granat was the winning pitcher, while Sarah Grimes returned to the mound to pick up the save. Cunningham went 3-for-3 including a double and triple for Johnson State while driving in a pair and scoring twice. Julie Gervais (Enosburg Falls, Vt./Enosburg) scored a pair of runs for JSC and took the pitching loss going six innings, allowing 16 hits, and striking out one.
Johnson State moves to 0-2 on the year and will play at Sage College on Sunday while Gordon is now 6-7 and will return to action with another non-conference game Monday at Salem State.
