Laura Emilo was 4-for-6 with two doubles as Castleton State College swept a North Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from Johnson State 10-0 and 9-1 with both games shortened to five innings due to the mercy-rule.
Game One:
Freshman Tosha Whittemore pitched a complete-game shut-out, allowing three hits while striking out seven over five innings.
Castleton broke the game open with a six-run (two earned) second inning, as 10 Spartans came to the plate. Emilo led the offense with a single, double and one run scored. Sophomore Hilary Bemis connected for a two-run homerun in the three-run third inning to put the game out of reach.
Freshman Siobhan Whittemore collected two hits, one rbi and one run scored while Laura Rogers also added a pair of hits and two runs scored.
Johnson State received hits from Miranda Robtoy (So., Barre, Vt./Spaulding), Kayla Golfin (Fr., Castleton, Vt./Fair Haven) and Kathleen Garrity (Fr., Simsbury, Vt./Simsbury) in the loss. Julie Gervais (So., Enosburg Falls, Vt./Enosburg) took the loss, pitching four innings and allowing five earned runs on 10 hits while striking out two.
Game Two:
Castleton pounded out 11 hits in the nightcap, led by Emilo and Brandy White who each doubled, singled and drove in one run apiece.
The Spartans once again put together a six-run inning, this time in the fourth, as 10 Spartans came to the plate.
Freshman Maggie Mercy picked up her first collegiate win, going all five innings, allowing one earned on six hits while striking out three.
Johnson State’s lone run came in the second inning. Golfin singled with one out, stole second and after a ground out moved her to third, was singled home by Hillary Seel (Fr., Barre, Vt./Spaulding).
Gervais was once again tabbed with the loss, allowing seven earned over four innings of work. Erin Glock (So., South Woodstock, Vt./Windsor) added two hits for the 0-18 (0-10 NAC) Badgers.
Angie Carpenter and Mercy each stroked run-scoring doubles in the game as Castleton improves to 6-16 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
Both teams will play host to NAC doubleheaders this weekend. Castleton will host Wheelock on Saturday at 1:00 pm, followed by a Sunday meeting with Lesley, also at 1:00 pm. Johnson State will host Lesley Saturday and Wheelock Sunday.
