Badgers Sweep Mustangs

South Portland, Maine (April 4, 2009)

Johnson State moved to 3-2 overall on the season a pair of non-conference softball victories on Saturday over Central Maine Community College in games played at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland.

GAME 1: JSC 4, CMCC 1

Pitcher Julie Gervais (Enosburg Falls, Vt./Enosburg) pitched a seven-inning complete game in game one of the double header.  Gervais did not allow a earned run in the game, struck out six while walking one, and only surrendered a single hit.

Gervais also starred at the plate going 3-for-3 and scoring three runs while senior Allie Cunningham (Manchester, N.H./Central) drove in three runs.

The Badgers struck for two first-inning runs powered by consecutive singles by Ashley Allegrini (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich), Cunningham, and Morgan Rogerson (Hardwick, Vt./Hazen).  The Badgers held on as Central Maine, after loading the bases in the first but did not score, did not earn a hit until the sixth inning, a baserunner that eventually scored.

GAME 2:  JSC 10, CMCC 7

An eight-run third inning saw Johnson State turn a 6-1 deficit into a 9-6 lead and the Badgers would hold on for the win.

CarolAnn Jackson (Enosburg Falls, Vt./Enosburg) was the starting pitcher for Johnson going two innings and allowing six runs, three earned, before Cunningham came on to throw the final five innings.  Cunningham silenced the Mustang bats by allowing only one hit and one unearned run while striking out eight.

Gervais was again an offensive standout going 1-for-4 with two runs, two stolen bases, and three RBI.

Johnson State will look to build on the team's three-game win streak on Tuesday when they travel to SUNY-Cobleskill for a 3:30 first-pitch.
