Mountaineers Pull Away From Johnson

JOHNSON, Vt. (October 13, 2009) - Southern Vermont used a pair of second-half tallies to turn a halftime tie into a 3-1 non-conference men’s soccer victory at Johnson State College on Tuesday at Minaert Field.  The loss drops Johnson to 6-5-1 overall while Southern Vermont improves to 9-3-1.

 

The Mountaineers struck first at the 26:25 mark when Adrien Alexis (Maplewood, N.J.) took a long lead pass from Nick Haggerty (Wynantskill, N.Y.) and deposited it past Johnson keeper Steve Noyes (Barre, Vt./Spaulding).

 

Johnson would knot the score at 1-1 just before the half at 42:58 when Kaleb Willis (Phillipsburg, N.J./Belvidere) floated a corner-kick that Christopher Keefer (Montague, N.J./Port Jervis) put a head on, redirected towards Victor Abass (Sudan/Cedar Park Christian) who then headed to the goal.  The ball was tipped by the SVC keeper Elias Skiff (Durham, N.Y.) but the ball trickled into the goal for the score.

 

The score would remain tied at 1-1 until the 68:37 mark when Alex Borini (Schenectady, N.Y.) dribbled into the Johnson defense, found a seem to fire a shot, and beat Noyes to his left to give the Mountaineers the lead the would not relinquish.  SVC would get the insurance goal less than two minutes later when Haggerty took a nice feed from Borini and recorded the third and final Mountaineer goal of the day.

 

Noyes would finish the game with six saves while Skiff made seven stops for SVC in the win.

 

Johnson State will step back into North Atlantic Conference play with a games in Maine this weekend.  The Badgers play at Maine Maritime on Saturday and Husson on Sunday, both games kicking off at 3:00 pm.  Southern Vermont will play at North East Collegiate Conference foe Becker College on Saturday at 5:30 pm in their next contest.
