Johnson State trailed by only one heading into the half but Elms scored 60 second-half points and pulled away for a 95-79 North Atlantic Conference men’s basketball win in Carter Gymnasium on Saturday.
A solid defensive effort helped key an effort that held the potent Elms offense to 32% shooting from the field but the Blazers connected on 5-of-9 three-pointers to fuel the 35-34 halftime lead.
Elms (17-6, 10-2 NAC) would use over-the-top passing for lay ups and 10 second half offensive rebounds to spark their offense and Juan Galdon (Holyoke, Mass.) canned 10-of-10 free throws en route to a game-high 29 points to keep the Badgers at bay.
Johnson State (9-15, 4-8 NAC) received a tremendous effort from junior forward John Foley (Valley Stream, N.Y./Holy Cross) as he scored a career-high 27 points on 13-of-21 shooting and snatched nine rebounds. Charlie Viana (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream South) tossed in 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Bobby Shedd (Johnson, Vt./Lamoille Union) added 13 points and hauled down nine boards.
Nate Hawes (New Hope, Minn.) was outstanding all day scoring 13 points and grabbing a game-high 17 rebounds. Randy Hite (Hartford, Conn.) came off the bench to score 14 points and key a bench scoring effort that out did the Badgers’ bench 34-9.
Johnson State, who saw seniors Viana and Chris Lamica (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) play in their last games at Carter Gym, will wrap up their regular-season at Castleton State on Friday before their North Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal game on the following Tuesday. Elms will host Newbury on Tuesday and then wrap up their season at Wheelock on Saturday.
