JOHNSON, Vt. (September 23, 2010) - Johnson State College athletics is proud to announce the hiring of Laura Laramee as their new Head Men’s Tennis Coach.  Laramee will replace Dean Writer who led the program for the last four years before resigning this spring after the completion of the 2010 spring season.  Laramee, who is also the Assistant Women’s Tennis Coach at Johnson State, will assume the responsibilities as head men’s coach immediately.

Coach Laramee, a native of Newport, Vermont, joined the Johnson State coaching staff as assistant to Michele Whitmore, Head Women’s Tennis Coach, in the fall of 2009.  Laramee helped the Lady Badgers to a 3-10 season in 2009 and has the team sitting at 2-3 overall, 2-1 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) early this fall.

A tennis enthusiast for years, Coach Laramee also holds positions with Lake Region High School as Head Girls Tennis Coach as well as with Smugglers’ Notch Resort as Tennis Instructor.

“It has always been a goal to elevate myself as a coach and to push myself to be a better instructor.  The challenge of coaching men at the collegiate level is one I am looking forward to and one I am ready for,” said Coach Laramee.  “I have coached males from young children to experienced adults.  This is going to be a great chance to show what I can do.”

“I hope to build on the very strong foundation that Coach Writer has put together over the last four years.  I am excited about the level of dedication I have seen from the men’s program in recent years and hope use my dedication and passion for the game as the fuel for the program and to take it to even higher levels.”

“Certainly recruiting talented student-athletes to join our program is a priority moving forward,” stated Coach Laramee.  “In terms of getting ready for the spring season I will hope to make this team the most fit group around.  A high fitness level and competitive spirit as a group is and will always be an expectation for my teams.  To be the stronger, more fit individual late in matches is crucial.”

Director of Athletics Barb Lougee commented, “Laura brings tremendous tennis skills and coaching experience to Johnson.  She has had a great impact on our women’s program already and know she will continue the growth and momentum we have on the men’s side.”

The Johnson men’s program finished the 2010 season with a 4-7 overall record, 4-4 in the NAC and are slated to return every team member that saw match competition last season including junior Ryan Joy (North Montpelier, Vt./U-32) who went 7-3 last season at the #1 singles flight earning him NAC First Team Singles honors.

Coach Laramee and the Johnson State men’s tennis team is scheduled to open their season in March when they host NAC opponent Castleton State College.
